The Scene – Since 1954, this cozy West Village joint has been serving up solid Southern comfort to plain folks and the slavish celebs whose photos bedeck the warm pink walls. – – The Food – It's a hearty soul who can chow through an entire dinner special, and many have been known to toss in the towel after gobbling down the two included sides. Rich mac and cheese and buttery grits may not be kind to the thighs, but they do the soul a world of good. After glimpsing a neighboring table's smothered chicken or succulent barbecued pork, most find a way to soldier on. Finish…

  2. The food that I had was good (fried whiting, potato salad, okra), but then again that's my usual at that location.
  3. had the salmon croquette that tasted like that dry, ground generic tuna that they used to serve in the public school cafeteria, lumped up in a ball and then thrown into some grease.
  4. used to recommend this restaurant to everyone I knew: great food, good value, generally good service.
  5. The food was terrible.
  6. And I don't care that their specialty is soul food--they have no right serving inferior burgers.
  7. If you're the kind of person that can go to a good restaurant that has great food and give it one star because the waiter had a puss on their face, you shouldn't be writing food reviews!
  8. good food

Do not listen to this last guy

by galager75

The prior review is ridiculous.

Listen, this place is truly old school. It's been around a long time. If you're planning on being attended to, they do the minimum, but usually friendly enough.

The reason to come here is the food, plain and simple. They serve seriously good soul food. Everything is good. Mac and cheese, fried chicken, pork chops, breakfast is fantastic and can be had anytime. The bacon is absolutely the best this side of Peter Luger's (yes I think they bacon at Luger's is their best dish, forget the steak!).

This is a place that has character, history and great soul food. Don't some here expecting stellar service that's the way it's been for 50+years. They do play music, usually R&B. Sometimes the music is loud.

THERE IS ONE REASON TO COME HERE, THE FOOD!!!

If you're the kind of person that can go to a good restaurant that has great food and give it one star because the waiter had a puss on their face, you shouldn't be writing food reviews!

  • Pros: The food
  • Cons: Small and the service is what it is.

AVOID AVOID AVOID

by Leonardo Andres

I've been to this place three times and after today I have decided to no longer patronize this business. The major complaint I have noticed every time is that the staff, on every level, is completely low class and unprofessional. On one occassion I witnessed an argument between two employees that seemed like it could very easily have led to a fight (yelling, profanity, threats).

EVERYTIME I have been there I and my girlfriend have been treated poorly in one way or another by waitstaff either by not being acknowledged at all, made to wait long time before we were even greeted, or being addressed as if they had a bad day. At times we could be smiled at and at times we could be scowled at, then ignored, then smiled at again all by the same waitress (moodswings?)

The music is blasted loudly, and very abruptly, as if it is assumed that EVERYBODY in there wants to hear loud music. You could be having a good conversation and then all of a sudden they start blaring something out of the jukebox and you cant even hear your self speak!

Today my girlfriend was addressed very dissmissively by a waitress, Jillian, who wasnt even serving us to begin with! I am in a service business, and I can say that your attitude and personality is EVERYTHING in service. Everything should have a smile to go with it and your tone should be upbeat and positive. It is tough to have a bad day in service businesses because you cannot allow that to affect your clientele at all! This is what the most successful service providers of any business know and understand. It doesnt matter what you are going through, If you are serving people, you'd better smile and be positive because if you do they will aaaalways come back to you.

This is the last time I will return here to give my money up to a business that has such low level people working there. We gave it enough chances. This place needs an entire face lift in every sense. If the owners of this business are not making as much money as they should be making then I assure you this is why. And if they feel that they are making enough, I can assure you that they could be making waaaaay more than they ever dreamed of if they paid good attention to fixing some key issues.

  • Pros: Food is ok
  • Cons: Completely unprofessional (no class) staff, looong wait

Southern Delight

by Atosha

I've dropped a lot of money here. The reason for that is the food feeds the soul. Soul Food. Its hard to find decent soul food in NYC, very hard. This is a place where the chicken, mac & cheese and the collard greens is straight from the southern pages of cooking. Not everything is great on the menu but a great effort is done to keep the 50 year tradition in tact. I recommend to try the traditional southern dishes offered before making a decision on the overall cuisine.

  • Pros: Fresh, delicious food
  • Cons: Needs work on overall service and atmosphere

I was recommended by a friend that the Pink Teacup has mouth watering food. Trust me it wasn't a lie, the potatoe salad is a must have. The peach cobbler is more like desert heaven. I was able to have a dinner for two with desert for under 35 dollars...............Highly recommended....
