Editorial Review for The Place – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
Despite its supremely generic name, the Place is an intimate restaurant full of comfy touches like wood beams, stone walls, multiple fireplaces and a cozy bar. Warm candlelight fills the room, which feels vaguely like a Greek grotto.
The Food
Chef William Stroby cooks inflected comfort food, featuring entrees such as grilled leg of lamb with new potatoes and haricot verts in a rosemary jus, braised beef short ribs with horseradish and mashed potatoes, and a spiced fish stew. For a quick bite, settle in at the bar and order some tapas, all of which pair beautifully with the selection of South African and Chilean wines.

The scene and mood is pretty date-friendly, certainly dim and romantic. They have a decent selection of wines and the menu is pretty broad. We got some "tapas-stlyes" apps to share and were not very impressed. The entrees were just average. Go for drinks, before or after dinner, but find on of the other local spots to enjoy something worthwhile!

I should have realized that everyone has a different definition of "romantic" when I booked this place for Valentine's day dinner. As soon as we stepped in, we couldn't believe our ears/eyes. It was the over-the-top cheesy valentine's day decor that overwhelmed us at first. And then we had to put up with all these cheesy 80's love songs literally blasting all throughout the dinner. With Red heart shaped balloons everywhere, heart glitter and paper cuts on the table, I felt like I was having a date at a kindergarten. Food was just ok at best, but obviously overpriced for the special day ($75 Pre fix for the same dishes from regular menu?!?) . Crowd wasn't very nice either. I couldn't believe the fact that people were staring at us and talked about us - I suppose it was because we were one of the few gay couples there . I felt like they had never been to a restaurant in the city before, if you know what I mean. I learned my lesson -- people's choice ( you know this place was voted "most romantic restaurant in NY) is not always right, especially when those people really don't have a good taste.
