“This underground (literally) bar has a surprisingly cool atmosphere.”
“The crowd is very friendly, there is always a heated beer pong game going on, and the guys to girls ratio is mostly even.”
“Love them wings”
“With cheap cheap drinks - $1 beers and beer pong, Christmas lights and an obvious lack of men in suits it is a great place to kick back and have some good old fashioned fun.”
“The bartenders were mostly male, but service wasn't bad, just expensive!”
“think people just got tired of the expensive drinks and went elsewhere after this.”
“they make great margaritas, and devin the bartender introduced me and my friends to long beach iced teas.”
The name says it all at this West Village dive for the college crowd--drink up..
In Short
Aptly named for its basement setup, this bar rocks with the right tunes, lots of drunken NYU students and cheesy year-round Christmas lights. Reasonable prices and specials abound; however, the mixed drinks are small, and the beer is often served in warm mugs. That old faithful, "What's your major?" is often bandied about, and video games please the youngish crowd.
Expensive Drinks, Ugly Basement Bar, Boring!!. Well, I don't know about some of these other reviewers, but the beer here is NOT cheap by any means. I don't consider $5 for a bottle of bud cheap compared to several other great dive bars in the city. I saw signs advertising cheaper drinks during happy hour and for women, but if you're a guy going there at night, you're going to get ripped off for each drink you purchase. When I first got there, the place was fairly crowded but then actually became less crowded by 11pm. I think people just got tired of the expensive drinks and went elsewhere after this. This place is also very clicky, everyone knows each other and don't really seem to be in the mood to meet new people. My gf and I sat there for quite a while, and not one other patron greeted us or said a word to us the entire time we were there. This is unusual compared to most of the other bars I like to frequent. The music was being provided by some bad DJ who played mostly rap music. The only good song he played going outside the hip hop genre was Pour Some Sugar on Me. The bartenders were mostly male, but service wasn't bad, just expensive! There are so many better bars to go to in the city that charge much less for drinks, so why waste your time at Down The Hatch.
Cheap drinks - good times!. Down the Hatch brings me back to what little I manage to remember about my raucous college party days. With cheap cheap drinks - $1 beers and beer pong, Christmas lights and an obvious lack of men in suits it is a great place to kick back and have some good old fashioned fun. The bartenders are attentive and the music is always sure to please. My only minor complaint is of the size of the restrooms (although from the layout of this underground bar I know not much can be done).
Foosball... Enough Said. Foosball and cheap drinks. I'm not usually into loud, crowded bars, but I'll make an exception for DTH/OTW/Jakes... Always a good game of foosball to be had.
New York's Best Bar. Come here to get away from all those stuck up suits of new york. The drink specials are the best in town. No other bar in New York can match there prices. Go there for happy hour, for lunch, or just to get drunk. If you read GQ or Cosmo then this place isn't for you. Everyone that goes to DHT, goes because of its friendly atmosphere and friendly bartender. DHT is a great place to go if you're tired of paying $7 for a beer.
Most fun you could have, and cheap too!. Just went there last night... it was crowded because of the football game, but the crowd was still friendly. Once the game ended, it opened up, and we made friends with this amazing bartender, Owen. He hooked us up, made great drinks (with flare), and made a night out with the girls that much more fun. Thanks Owen! I'll be coming back here regularly :)
good. went there for my birthday...cute bartenders that were quick! way too packed though for a party...good for young singles...some very cute guys and then some not so cute guys. if youre looking for strong and good drinks and want a low key place then go to down the hatch.
Best Bartenders, Cheap Beer. This place is one of the only stops my friends and I frequent when we're out on weekends. If you're into wings, I hear they're amazing(I'm not), and the draft beer is ridiculously cheap. My favorite part is the staff, Owen is the best looking bartender I've ever seen-all of them are quick and helpful....a must for anyone wanting to have a badass time. For anyone who wants to comlain about noise, its probably because it is a bar, full of drunk college kids who play beer pong and eat wings-are you expecting a damn lounge on the upper west side?
It is a basement and small.... But you have a great ol' time.. woo hoo! Grab a few of your friends, head over there and get drunk. Well after all thats what the place is all about. Its extremely tiny but it makes it even more intimate. Cheap drinks and good music. Not much to say except only if you're a totally highclass prude you will not have fun here.. And its in West 4, there are many other bars to visit if you're not content with this one. Great area.
Not just for college students! This place rocks any night of the week.. If you ever really feel the need to do some serious drinking, this has got to be the place to do it. Contrary to the editorial profile, I have seen people of all ages drift into DTH. Although the crowd's majority is college kids and recent college grads, there is enough diversity in here to keep things interesting. The music is typical dive bar fare, the drinks are cheap. What separates DTH from the pack are the bartenders, who are extremey efficient, friendly and infamous for their buybacks and deal-making. They are the main reason I come back. Sure, the place does kinda smell like urine, and the table set ups aren't very conducive to moving around the place--but it's still awesome and deserves a try.
