The Scene
A teensy shop on an especially quaint stretch of Bleecker Street, Biography lures literary types with well-chosen selections. As expected, biography is the specialty, but not to the exclusion of other categories. Indeed the offerings have a surprising breadth. In keeping with local interests, there's a good supply of children's books as well as sections devoted to women's issues and gay and lesbian studies.
The Goods
With these hardcover prices, you can feel good about supporting an independent bookseller without worrying about losing out on a better deal at the chains. The miscellaneous piles on the outside tables are another source of bargain potential. If there's something you can't find, the staff will happily order it, thereby providing you another way to forsake the megastores' soulless stacks.

Tucked away on a picturesque corner of Bleecker Street (right across from the Magnolia, so it's not exactly poorly-trafficked, though) is this great little bookstore. Though it's tiny, it always manages to have a great selection of new releases and old standards. it's rare that you can find a bookstore that's more likely than not to have what you want, and even rarer to find an independent one -- with 20% off all hardbacks. Beats B&N any day.
