“lived in New York for three years before Johanna and Shaun opened Seagull Haircutters - three years of never being quite happy with my hair, and trying out stylists that other people recommended, who did all kinds of things with my hair - but none that ”
“He changed my hair from fried blonde to stunning reds(auburns and wines) with soft blonde highlights.”
“Seagull is very friendly and welcoming with a fresh vibe.”
“Cool music, great conversation, cute place.”
“I've since come back again and again (i've now added super cool subtle red streaks!)”
“The whole Seagull crew is fun friendly, and knowledgeable when it comes to hair.”
“This isn't some huge pretentious salon, its intimate and personable.”
“would say Shaun's a mind reader, but it's more like he's a great communicator - he not only listens, but is perceptive and I think he's just quick and "gets it.”
Not worth it.....
Overpriced. Overcharged. Understyled. Not worth paying $125 +.
I did a long search to find a place where I can get a nice short haircut. For $125 I got the same haircut that I would get at a regular $26 Jean something David salon. Very disappointing experience.
BEST CUT AND COLOR IN NEW YORK!. I came to New York for the purpose of getting a whole new look. I found Seagull Haircutters in Citysearch and was not disappointed. They cut over 11" of my hair and sent it to locks of love. Then, they highlighted my hair and gave me the best cut I have ever had. I look like a brand new person! I was worried when I made my appointment that they would be snobby to me since I am from out of town. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Everyone that works there crowded around me and gave me their opinions. Then they took pictures of my before and after. Basically, I felt like part of the family. They couldn't have been nicer. I was there for 4 hours for my makeover and it flew by. All my friends want to go to Seagull when they visit to get their hair done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Shaun, Johanna, Luke and Kim are the best!
Relaxing Vibe and Incredible Service!!!. This salon was recommended to me by a client of mine when my usual stylist moved out of the country. I was pleasantly surprised by the incredible service and wonderful atmosphere at Seagull. Shaun cut my hair and did a fabulous job. For someone who had never cut my hair before I was really happy with the results and I will definitely be going back for my next hair-cut and color.
SHAUN!. Shaun at seagull has taken the guess-work out of my hair. I came in for my first visit with a grown out bob and terrible roots (maybe 6 months ago) and he gave me a cut that falls perfectly and helped me grow my hair longer. And I finally have a hair color with total gray coverage that is not too dark and is really natural and rich looking. in the past I was asking for the wrong thing or settling for something that wasn't quite right for my skin tone. My husband (not the type to notice) immediately said "something" looked different and better when he saw my new color. I get tons of compliments and my skin looks healthier and my eyes brighter. Also shaun is absolutely hilarious and I leave in a great mood. The salon is welcoming and great location. highly recommended
Ok so I'm cheap - BUT Seagull is worth the $$$!.
I have never had such a ridiculously awesome haircut IN MY LIFE. Kate is like the tinkerbell of hair stylists, just pouring hot haircut magic all over you. Also astounding to me was how easy it was to communicate with her, even though I've always had trouble explaining to my stylist what I was looking for (totally my fault, I never know what to say and I'm totally intimidated and end up stammering something like, "uh, you know, whatever, just um"). I felt like she reached inside my head and knew exactly what I wanted. I feel so s*xy and hip, even when I roll out of bed in the morning (although I don't leave the house that way, obviously). Plus she was really fun to chat with, and showed me how to bust it out like Brigitte Bardot, it was awesome and fun. I left Seagull feeling great about myself and strolling through the west village like I owned it (even though I live in washington heights). I can't wait to go back for a maintenance trim (which is free, by the way) and visit Seagull again.
So if you're thinking about finally putting down the cash for a brilliant stylist, Kate at Seagull is for sure my pick! I can't imagine she could turn out anything less than awesome.
The Saving Grace of Haircutting (Go to KIM!!!!). After having a terrible haircut at my previous salon, I was a bit nervous about getting a cut. Even though it had only been a month since my last cut, I was in need of a makeover. I literally walked into Seagull Haircutters and the lovely receptionist Johanna said that I could get cut and highlights that day, in a few moments. I sat and waited while my guardian-angel-to-be Kim finished up. Kim greeted me with such wamth and kindness and really examined my hair before hand and talked to me about what I wanted before reaching for the scissors. She wanted to fix the damage and give me a few highlights, plus keep the length. We even came up with a game plan for the next time I would come in which gave me something to look forwards too while I grew out my locks. In 2.5 hours, I looked and felt like a new person. I had the most relaxing afternoon. Seagull Haircutters is the by far the best salon I've been to, not to mention the most fantastic cut. Kim truly is the saving grace of haircutting.
I've been in ny for three years and i've tried every kind of salon, high end, low end, in queens, uptown, midtown, downtown....and i couldn't find one stylist that understood what i wanted for my long hair. I ended up going to Shaun today for a hair cut and he gave me one of the best hair cuts ever!
I highly recommend Seagull, friendly, down to earth with lovely hair cuts :)
best salon I've been to. Had not been to a hairdresser for a year, and my thinning middle-aged hair was long and graying and out of control (was always wearing it up in a bun). Kate was great; did not make me feel middle-aged, and gave me a transforming cut and color. It's so easy; I can just wash it and run (haven't had a bun since). I don't like uptown glitzy snooty salons, and this couldn't be more different -- friendly, funky, and with great work. I will definitely be going back.
best. cut. ever.. kate is phenomenal - listens to what you say, fast, relaxed, and improvisational in the best possible way. she is truly collaborative and really trustworthy. if i go in with an idea, she is quick to either agree, disagree, or offer modifications... in any case she is always right. even when she is supposedly done, she is always willing to tweak things if you aren't thrilled with the end result. the entire staff is funny and quick and "gets it", so to speak. they are totally hip without being pretentious. every time i leave, i take a stack of cards to pass out - best place i have found in new york.
my hair savior. Have tried a few places around the neighborhood - have paid from 200+ trying to find a new stylist. Now my hair grows back Incredibly slow ? have been growing it out from a bob back in 05 and is just past my shoulders ; so when it comes to doing anything with my hair, I can?t have it messed up because it will take forever to correct itself ? literally. THANKFULLY, Kate is great at what she does. We spoke about what I was wanting and gave some tips and together came up with an idea. My hair looked, and still looks, fabulous. Not the "works great the first day but can never replicate it", and i don't have to straighten it to look good. Needless to say I?ll be following her to whichever salon she goes to. The establishment is good also, not upscale but comfortable and all the people there where so friendly.
