The Scene – Isn't any non-Blockbuster video store supposed to be a hole-in-the-wall? Not so the World of Video, which is so spacious and beautifully organized, it's no wonder the staff has placed benches in strategic spots around the store--of course you want to hang out here. Best of all are the large Picasso-esque acrylic paintings advertising recent releases hung throughout the space. – – The Goods – It's all business once you get into the stacks where the movies are displayed. Only their spines are visible (no cover art for the true cinemaphile) with color-coded…

INCREDIBLE!

by feeby64

I once went in to this video store on Halloween and asked

for 5 of their recommended horror movies. They didn't even have to look on the computer or on the shelves.

They picked out the best films I have ever seen.

They are so knowledgeable about movies that all I need

to do is give them a genre and they will automatically have

a list of great films that I always love. This video store is

not just a place to rent movies...it's one of the only small

businesses that make me glad I live here.

Kind of the only game in town.....

by tboom49

I first started visiting WOV about 25 years ago, when it was located above a pizza parlor on 7th Ave. It had, and still has, an a-maz-ing collection of adult movies. Straight, gay, bi, transgender...you name it and WOV had it. It was (and still is) located near NYU film school and the clerks would always be able to recommend new indie features, or documentaries. Many movies never really saw the light of day when they were distributed, but they found a home at WOV. They no longer offer the discount for buying a book of one hundred rentals for a heavily discounted price. So I revisited the other day and it seems smaller now in the new store on Greenwich Avenue. They still have a good selection of adult stuff though. Ssssh-aaa-winngg....

Unfortunately I won't be back

by JPR08

Several of us will NEVER go back. I have been renting from world of video for 3 years now, and I have always been impressed with their selection (although they are often out of a movie if it's popular b/c they have 1 copy or just a couple copies). The older gentlemen are very nice, but the younger/trying-way-too-hard-to-be-a-hipster guy with glasses and dark hair and a glazed look in his eyes is a real jerk and is pretty short-sighted. i rented a movie that is like 20 years old and noone is staking out the store to rent. right after i watched it, i moved about a block away and i forgot for a week that i had it (my mistake). so when i got there i was asked by this guy if it was on time and i said "no it's late, but i'll pay in a week when i rent another movie if that's ok with you bc i come in here all the time?" he was a real jerk about it and said "no you need to pay now". so i said ok, no big deal. he told me it was $16. i know the policy, but i politely asked him to knock that down a little. EVERY other guy working the store has always waived the fee or knocked it down b/c i rent a lot and travel and sometimes i have a late fee. this guy was such a jerk about it and didn't care that i was a customer. i didn't have cash on me so he insisted my dad (who was with me) pay. Hopefully the owners read this b/c they seem to really care about their business and their customers. I won't be back, neither will the following people i recommended and rented from you all the time: my father, my friend on perry st, my girlfriend, my brother, and my old roommate who lives a block away. good thing you got your $16 though. in retrospect, i should have just kept the crappy old, scratched dvd b.c it was worth less than the $16 in late fees i was rudely ordered to pay. your counter-guy is short sighted and dumb. this guy: tall, dark hair, goofy glasses, aloof attitude. take care. My name is Jeremy Romine and you can just cancel my membership.

Best video store EVER

by veronicavm

I'm a film major at Columbia and I've been going to this place since I was born, when they really were a hole-in-the-wall kind of joint, and I'm fiercely loyal to them. These guys know what they're doing; they know movies and "film" better than any other video store I've ever found, and they're not at all pretentious about it (cough *Kim's*). The owner teaches NYU film courses and they repay loyalty with little favors, great recommendations, and general friendliness. They have movies you can't find anywhere else, from original Windsor McKay animations to 50s french naughty flicks to the entire Criterion collection to the latest blockbuster. Plus, they're just cool people.

  • Pros: cheap, excellent selection, personal and non-judgmental service, employees possess great expertise
  • Cons: none!

Charge a Fee to Start Renting There

by lamarie

I usually get my movies from Netflix, but was in between videos and decided to give this place a shot. I walked over, picked out a movie, and then was told that it would cost me $25 just to join so that I could start renting. No thanks....

  • Pros: Convenient if you live in the neighborhood.
  • Cons: Charge you a $25 fee just to join.
