Editorial Review for Evergreen Video – by Melissa Kirsch

The Scene
Evergreen's serious about movies, and the floor-to-ceiling shelves of VHS and DVDs attests to it. Equally serious West Village film aficionados scour Leonard Maltin's video encyclopedia and tons of other reference books set up on their own dedicated table in search of the perfect rental. A shelf of staff picks highlights "lesser known gems," assuming "everyone already knows" about classics like "Citizen Kane" and "Casablanca."

The Goods

Somehow a top-notch, comprehensive selection of foreign and classic videos and DVDs has been stuffed into a cozy shop not much larger than your average one-bedroom on the same block. Films are meticulously organized--you can pick a country, then find action flicks from that country in seconds. In addition to the harder-to-find items, Evergreen also carries multiple copies of new releases, just like its big-chain brethren, so no one will walk out empty-handed.

evergreen has a great selection of foreign and indie movies, and the staff there acts like they were the creative geniuses behind all of them. despite not being the movie buffs they claim to be, they are so overwhelmingly obnoxious and condescending that i try to avoid the place if at all possible. hiring qualifications seem to be: has seen at least one hitchcock, loathes anyone who isn't 'funky', and a dash of french waiter condescension.

Pros: lots of good movies

Cons: irksome staff

Great place to get pretty much any classic or art film from the 20th century. They have new releases too.
