Strength, vitality, coordination, awareness, self-defense – Looking for one overall word to describe what Nabi Su has done for me, I think VITALITY is the best. In terms of strength, awareness, posture, coordination, confidence, and liveliness, I feel more filled with vitality in every sense of the word. When I just went to the gym, I always left the workout feeling exhausted but still I did not really change my body or my mind. With Nabi Su, I leave every class feeling strong and invigorated. It is a great work out--I am stronger and trimmer and lost weight--but even more important to me is that I am more "in the moment" and more clear in myself and in my dealings with others. It's real-deal martial arts training for transforming the body and the mind. It's fun too and has an aesthetic dimension to boot. And then there's the self-defense dimension! The immense benefit of this practice shows through clear as day.
A truly unique martial arts school – I have been to several other martial arts schools in the past and I believe it would be extremely difficult and maybe even impossible to find anything out there that is quite like this. People study martial arts for a variety of reasons; self-defense, physical fitness, mental discipline, all of which are greatly developed here. But the quality I find so unique and endearing about this school is it’s holistic focus on self-development, using martial arts as a transformational tool in becoming a more effective and fulfilled person.
The atmosphere at the school is very friendly and supportive and the training is both methodical and highly tailored to each student’s individual growth, allowing students to learn at their own pace while constantly refining and building upon what they’ve learned. The forms and techniques are fun to learn and they develop your body, and the way you connect with it, in all kinds of fascinating ways. As students progress, they gain a rewarding sense of accomplishment accompanied by a humbling awareness that they can always go deeper into the practice.
I have been with the school for six years now, picking up my black belt along the way, and I continue to find myself growing in increasingly subtle and profound ways. Through this practice I have become stronger and more confident and have noticed improvements in my posture, self-awareness, and overall sense of feeling good in my own skin. The lessons and skills I have acquired have been an invaluable source of strength when facing life’s challenges and adversities.
A rare find – Most people assume that I started going to Kung Fu for self-defense. I didn’t. In the beginning, I was just seeking exercise that was meaningful and would keep me motivated. In the last 5 years, I have gotten a lot more from it (in addition to learning how to defend myself). It really is about self-development—it requires that you do your best moment to moment. There is something rarified and beautiful in that in itself, even if I never advanced. But I did advance, and just earned my black belt. And I have found that the practice means more to me than belts.
Outside of class, I find I am stronger, more confident with my improved posture, and can focus on breathing to calm myself (a useful skill in NYC). My fellow students are smart, serious about the practice, and are truly wonderful people. We’re all part of the school to better ourselves; the environment is challenging without being threatening. I visited quite a few martial arts schools and did not encounter another like it. The forms are beautiful to watch and to perform. Through the practice I was surprised to find that it’s paradoxically heartening that you can always be better.
A physical and spiritual connection – I found Nabi Su on the internet one night and was amazed at its connection between the physical and spiritual and I never looked back. As an older student who never had any martial arts training or in that great of a physical shape the pace of the class and level of attention was just right. Scheduling and location are also important factors in my consideration since this kind of training require certain amount of dedication and commitment to get all the benefits. After 2 years of training of both Kung Fu and Taichi having attending at least twice a week, I found that I am walking around the city with a kind of mindfulness and posture and overall health benefits that I would not get just from sitting meditation or going to a gym. Think of it as a kind of walking meditation except that it is a bit faster and someone potentially could be kicking or throwing a fist at you and much more fun and exciting than yoga poses. Perfect thing to have in the middle of a pack subway.
Great Kung Fu and Tai Chi Training – The reason I give all 5 stars to this Kung Fu and Tai Chi school is that I get specific, tangible training and I progress in ways that I can really feel. Other schools give you the work out aspect, but in this school you get both - the work out and the deep training. That's what I was looking for. And I got the training from the very beginning - I didn't have to wait until I was advanced to get the corrections. All of the classes are geared to the students who are in them, from beginner through advanced, and as a result, we all get what we need, and our time is well spent. I get a good work out, I am learning self defense, and I can do many beautiful forms. The classes are small, the training is great and everyone is welcome. One of the best things about being a long time student in this school is that I notice that no matter what shape or what ability a student had when they first joined, every one who continues learns the forms and gets more graceful and becomes strong. This is a very wonderful thing, and it is the reason I rate this school so highly.
Training that can transform your life! – Nabi Su training has transformed my life on so many levels. It has made me physically strong and skilled, emotionally confident, and spiritually open. I feel blessed to have such an amazing teacher and supportive community to study martial arts with. This is a tremendous atmosphere for receiving a lot of individual attention and being encouraged to develop the body and mindset of a true martial artist. After 12 years of training, I am still learning new things and am never bored. As a woman, I can think of no better way to stay fit, and learn a discipline that enriches and could help save my life.

A great atmosphere to learn in – I wish I had started earlier. I put it off because I felt I needed to be in better shape, but there's no real need to prepare for the class beforehand. You learn everything you need as you go. This class is something I look forward to on a daily basis.
