Gracious and Groovy Indian Fare

by tomatogal

It must have been 'kismet': I was originally going to another, more famous store at Lexington and 28th vicinity a few months ago, but the indifference and brusque manner of their sales people totally turned me off. Heading up the avenue, I wound up just by luck, at SPICE CORNER - was I glad I did! The two gentlemen I met there were, without doubt the most friendly, helpful store personnel it has ever been my joy to encounter. I was unable to find my favorite African powdered cocoa for some time, and the SPICE CORNER guys recommended another product, from Israel, that they assured me was in stock all the time. It is excellent. Their pista burfi is fresh-made, sublime and comes in many variations - DON'T MISS IT! What SPICE CORNER lacks in store space and items is more than made up for by their staff's willingness to help, and great sense of service. The best! Go there - and soon.

  • Pros: ambience, staff, just overall good vibes

Indian Markets

by hyacinthgirl

I've been to tons of ethnic markets in the city and Spice Corner I've GOT to mention! It's a few doors down from (the more well-known) Kalustyan's Indian Market. It's tiny. And the selection is certainly not on the level of Kalustyan's---but the service and prices are WONDERFUL! While there shopping for some basics like dal, chilies, spices and Indian breads---the guys kept coming up to me offering me a basket to hold my goods, a sample of some sesame seed candy and any help that I needed. In the end, I found about 80% of what I was looking for, the staff answered all my questions, and I certainly saved some money as their prices are fantastic. Not only that, but I asked if the gentleman could get a handful of chilies for me---he threw a small handful into a bag and said, "No charge." A few moments later, I was handed a piece of candy and thanked me for my business.

Don't ge me wrong, Kalustyan's is amazing and, after my trip to Spice Corner, I headed a few doors down to get a few more things. But DEFINITELY stop at Spice Corner FIRST for your staples. The friendliest ethnic market (possibliy the friendliest market PERIOD) I've been in in NYC. They certainly know how to generate repeat business. I plan on going back in about two weeks! Can't wait to stock up!

Great service, and a nice variety of sweets

by gaijingirl

Of the number of sweets shoppes in Curry Hill, this is the one that you should go to. The guy is so wonderful to talk to, and burfis and jalybees abound....go!
