A fish- and vegetable-heavy Italian classic.. Apulia is on the heel of Italy's boot; it’s a fairly poor and arid region, and its food tends to reflect that. So as the area's primary ambassador to New York you might think that would make I Trulli a hard sell, especially given the lack of garlic and tomatoes in Puglian food. Instead, the restaurant more than compensates with bitter greens (arugula, dandelion, broccoli rabe), which give punch and earthiness to a wide-range of handmade pastas. The room is simple and unpretentious, with warm yellow walls and a glassed-in back area. It's not especially cheap, but in its own quiet way this is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city.
"Truly," not that good – Pros: okay service. Cons: Food one or two notches better than a good pizza shop. Service just okay. Noisy. Cramped tables. Expensive for what you get. Conclusion: "Truly," forget it!
Bad Experience – I'm very sad to say this but I went to I Trulli for my college graduation dinner and I did not leave pleased. I tried the restaurant out before and dined with just two people and it was lovely. When I showed up with my party of 10 a) we did not get the garden as I had requested over a month beforehand b) we had the absolutely worst service I have ever experience in NYC...and that's saying a lot. The waiter completely forgot to even write down people's meals, we sat at the table for over an hour before anyone took our order, and the staff was incredibly rude. If you do decide to go to this restaurant I recommend that you only order the pasta. The meat is horrendous--either cold or overcooked. My friend thought she was ordering a T-bone steak but it turned out to be pork chops. I won't ever be returning to I Trulli. There are plenty of other restaurants in nyc that are Truly better.
Best Pasta – Great dinner. I was fortunate enough to experience a fabulous dinner last night. I was a bit hesitant to go out on a rainy night and then was so glad i did. Everyone was friendly and the food was great. The room was so warm and inviting, it included a beautiful fireplace. I love eating homemade pasta and this was definetly one of the best, i have had in a longtime. The wine list had a page of wine reccomendations which we chose from and that rounded the meal off perfectly. I can't wait to go back.
Great neighborhood spot – This is our favorite place in the neighborhood. The garden is amazing in the summer and cozy in the winter. great food, great service and great ambience. We'd eat here every night if we could.
TERRIBLE SERVICE AND ATTITUDE. I TRULLI USED TO BE GOOD MANY YEARS AGO WHEN THE OWNER WAS INVOLVED. STOP GOING A FEW YEARS AGO AND TRIED AGAIN RECENTLY. STILL TERRIBLE ATTITUDE AND OVER PRICED. NEEDS PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND SERVICE. I FEEL BAD FOR SECONDARY WAITERS TRYINGTO MAKE A LIVING BUT GREETING AND DOOR PEOPLE REALLY NEED HELP. IF THEY DON'T WANT TO BE THERE THEN QUIT! Expensive but great atmosphere – We showed up on a Friday night at 7:30 without a reservation. We tried to get into Enoteca for a more affordable meal, but it was full, so we were sent over to I Trulli. The restaurant was also busy, but we were seated promptly at a table in front of the fireoven (which was actually a heavily trafficked area). Although nothing truly caught our eye, we finally ordered and were served high-quality food with surprisingly generous portions. Not huge, but sizeable for an upscale restaurant like this. The home made pasta was delicious, and the buffalo mozzarella was so flavorful almost meaty. The wine was expensive so we skipped it, but from the reviews, it sounds like it might have been worth trying their selection. Waiter was a bit aloof but the rest of the staff was very attentive. Definitely recommend especially if you're willing to splurge.
Pretty Good – This place has a very nice ambiance, we sat right by the fire, which was great. The server was friendly. One annoying point was that it took about 45 minutes in between courses. I was in no rush and it wasn't a big deal, but that's just a long time to wait. Dinner ended up taking almost 3 hours! The food was very good. The med. sea bass was delicious. The fresh mozz and tomato in the pastry puff app. was also fantastic. The crab ravioli was ok, a little undercooked for my taste. Drinks were strong and were refilled quickly. We weren't too happy when my friend had a vodka drink on the table and the waiter came by and filled it with water, without asking if it was water or a drink! Also a bit pricey, but to be expected. Overall pretty good.
Was good over summer, but changed somehow – Let?s face it, we are all ?critics? when it comes to cuisine. I could talk about the cheesy-ninety-eighties, country-club cuisine that the Chef at I Trulli delivers like Lamb and Veal Chops smothered in gelatinous, demi-glace from a can paired with improperly blanched vegetables. But this is not what brought me back to I Trulli after a long, interrupted departure a couple a months ago. I heard that somehow it was different- under new management, better service? something to those sorts. I admit it. I was looking for value and a simple plate of pasta. I was amazed at the difference. The servers looked sharp, the music was perfect, the lighting was romantic, and the knowledge/discipline of the staff had changed. It was a different I Trulli. Afterward, I went back several times with the same results. Magic! UNTIL, last night! The lights were too bright, the music was selected by the ?sommelier? I was told (including pop-culture music that my 20 daughter listens too), the servers (I came late) were walking around without ties as they left early for the shift, and the managers on the floor were horribly poised and dressed. (Over the summer we had a hip, spiky haired guy with sharp-witted, intelligence and a distinguished, older Italian gentlemen whose gracious service was a refreshing welcome.) Tonight, there was no one whatsoever. On our visit, the ?Sommelier?, was more interested in talking to her fellow coworkers, including the too-young assistant, than she was with us. We asked for her, not her assistant. Maybe she has her hands full in such a slow restaurant? Long story short: Our biggest let-down was our after-dinner drinks. We sat at the end of the bar while listening to every damn staff member complain about his and her job and how the restaurant had changed- well, we agree, CitySearch. Everyone always bitches about the food and the Chef on CitySearch. This just goes to show you the value of a good manager. Such a shame!
Fantastic Experience – I don't usually do these, but recently I went to I trulli for dinner and had such a nice time that I wanted to share it. I was most struck by the friendliness of the staff. I was greeted at the door and at the table with genuine enthusiasim. Our server was funny and knowledgeable, he consistendly checked on us and was helpful both with our questions about the menu and for suggestions of places to go after dinner. The food was great as well, fresh pasta like I've never had any where else and a great molten chocolate cake dessert. Basically I can't wait to go back so I can try everythign else on the menu.
TERRIBLE SERVICE - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND SAVE YOURSELF A HEADACHE – Bottom Line: I had a terrible dining experience. I took my girlfriend out to dinner for her birthday here, and it's safe to say I will NEVER be dining here again. I requested a table in the garden, and first we were brought to a table that had a spotlight right on it. The two tables to either side of this one were dimly lit, but the hostess did not even think to seat at either one of these tables. Appalled at the scene, I asked that we be seated at one of the tables right next to this one, and we sat down. After we ordered a bottle of wine, the waiter came by to take our order, but he forgot to mention the specials for the evening. I had to ask him what they were, and when he started rattling them off in broken English, he barely knew what items were available. I also had to refill the wine glasses myself the entire evening. When we had finished our meal and were about to order dessert, I excused myself and walked over to the hostess. I mentioned that it was my girlfriend's birthday and that I would like to have a birthday candle lit on her dessert. I had called in advance to make sure that they do this, and I was assured that they do. I told the hostess where we were sitting, and she told me that it would be taken care of. Sure enough, when our desserts came out, there was no birthday candle. We ate our desserts and I explained to my girlfriend what had happened. Still furious, I went back to the hostess to explain what had happened. I spoke with a different hostess, and she apologized and offered to bring another dessert out. I denied the offer because at that point, what difference would it have made -- the moment had passed. I expressed my disappointment again and walked back to my seat. A few minutes later, the hostess who had made the mistake came to our table and apologized. I said I was sorry too - sorry for ever coming here in the first place!
