An experience not to be missed !. What a pleasure to go back to Marchi's ,especially if you are lucky enough to go in the summertime, when you can dine outside in their beautiful Manhattan garden with the lit Empire State building for your backdrop. As always the service is wonderful, not to be out done by the food! The many courses are a tribute to the Northern Italian dining experience-fabulous.They serve you a varied choice of salads, anitipastos, and meat and fish courses fit for a king. For us the pasta course is the most phenomenal-it is one of the only homemade and hand rolled pasta in the city-so tender and delicious-just perfect for those who know the real thing at its best!Their desserts are a meal all to themselves. The most delicate and delicious little lemon custard squares (served at just the right temperature) and those outrageous crostoli's ( the fried sweet dough with powdered sugar)that you automatically become addicted to. We are lucky enough to travel all over the world-but when in New York we find a little piece of the refinement and elegance of true italian dining!!
Marchi's Restaurant - BEST EXPERIENCE & DELICIOUS 5 COURSE MEAL.
The BEST experience I have had.....people should appreciate a good home cooked meal. The waiters are in TUXEDOS, ready to serve you with a smile & delight you with personal attention. The 5 course meal is second to none. The Lasagna is fresh homemade pasta & served with a family reciped sauce (I guess the people who did not like it eat BOXED pasta). The variety of dishes is very impressive for a large group of either corporate individuals or a nice family gathering. I would recommend this restaurant over & over again. People have thanked me over & opver again for sending them to MARCHI's...the value is there.
THERE IS A VERY GOOD REASON WHY IT IS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 75 YEARS...BRAVO!!!!!!
1star for good atmosphere.
As some people wrote here, their food is not good at all.
The lazania, proudly served, was over cooked pasta with ordinary meet sauce (my 4years daughter cooks better).
Although food is not good, its atmosphere is nice and cozy. You can enjoy history and good service.
I do not recommend to go there as a restaurant but as a sight seeing point... I'll give 4stars.
Did not like the food at all. The restaurant itself is nice & cozy and the staff is friendly & helpful, but the food simply was NOT good. I'm not sure how they're managed to stay in business for so long serving food like that in Manhattan. The fixed menu has nothing to do with it -- it just didn't taste good. Too bad because I was really looking forward to the experience.
Not worth the visit. The food wasn't good. I don't know many people who eat huge stalks of celery and radishes. The lasagna wasn't good, pretty tasteless. I don't know many people who can eat a big bowl of beets either. The fish was ok, but I could have gotten that at a fish and chips place. Their bowl of tossed salad, is just lettuce. I liked the fact that they served some market fruit, though not too fresh looking. But you better eat it all there because you can't take it home with you if you don't finish it. I highly recommend that you go some place else.
A lot of fun and a lot of food.
We went to Marchi's with a family who had been going there for nearly 40 years. It was delightful.
Good list of Italian wines and a few winners from California as well.
A big plate of fresh celery, radishes and fennel with some melon slices and salamis and cheese are the starters. Then another course with some fish, beets and beans. Then some homemade lasagna. Very unusual and very good. THEN... a course of chicken, veal (which was the least impressive thing) and some mushrooms with them. THEN... a nice little lemon tart and a big plate of crostini.
Wow. Seriously nice. Also, they've created a garden space outside with a view of the Empire State Building for spring dining. I look forward to returning.
Great restaurant for food lovers. This is not a good place for people who are into "fad gourmet" dinng, but the quality is consistently high, and is always delicious! My husband live over 100 miles from NYC, but make it a point to eat at Marchi's whenever we are in town (for some 40 years). Their menu, although fixed, is of high quality and is really delicious. The North Italian stlye lasagne is particularly good! One caveat: pace yourself! There are several courses, including desserts. If you fill up on the early courses, you may be too stuffed to enjoy the entire meal.
No thank you. I have to agree with the other negative reviews. My friend picked this place last night (for reasons I will never understand) and I was VERY disappointed. What a waste.
New York Style, Old World Charm. After 75 years the Marchi family still do things the same way they always have, because from day one it has worked! The meal is well balanced and well priced. The wait staff was exceptional, polite and attentive. You can't get a better deal. The food is fresh and ambience is charming and dinning al fresco is like eating in Europe! If you have not been, it is worth a try.
A Change Of Pace. Although on the expensive side, Marchi's offers a change of pace from your traditional restaurant. You pay a fixed price, and then sit down and enjoy the menuless meal. From the many appetizers, to the pasta, and then the two main courses, the food never seems to stop coming. The meal finishes up with a few great dessert selections. The quality of the food is oustanding (it should be; the Marchi family has used the same menu for generations!) and the service is second to none. The servers are always on point for your every need. Although the ambience does, as someone previously stated, feel like an american legion hall, the excellent food more than makes up for it.
