The Scene – There are no rules at Sarge's: It's open 24/7 and serves every kind of food--from potato latkes to chicken and ribs--to every kind of customer, from businesspeople at breakfast to recuperating club kids at 4am. It looks like an old-style Jewish deli, with cheeky waitresses to match, but it's really a crossroads of all of New York City. – – The Food – For the most part, Sarge's New York classic menu is first-rate. The best dishes are the sandwiches, like the triple-decker fantasy of corned beef, tongue and chopped liver, and the traditional deli entrees,…

Editor's Tips

When to Go:
It's open 24/7, but Sarge's attracts its most interesting and diverse crowd after midnight.
ambiance
100.0% positive
  1. They do a great rang of desserts aswell and for the atmosphere and service the price is more than reasonable.
  2. The service ambience and everything else is excellent.
  3. The prices were reasonable, the service good, the decor typical NY deli (that's a good thing).

  1. Sarge's would be a good choice for tourists who find themselves checking into their hotel at odd hours with a big appetite who want to start off their New York trip with a reasonably authentic Manhattan experience (i.e. not a chain restaurant).
  2. The food recipes originally came from the owners, "food Grandma used to make" and if you are looking for the BEST appetizing, smoked fish, pastrami, or burgers, shrimp or just an excellent hot dog - this is by far the BEST deli in NYC.
  3. They have 100 sandwhiches on their menu and they serve stale bread?
  4. The food was good, not great.
  5. My wife had the fried shrimp which are huge and loved it.
  6. If you're hungry for some great sandwhiches or deli meat, come to Sarges for it's unbelievale pastrami, and sugar free cheesecakes.
  7. Sarge's is open 24/7 which is a huge asset for those who seek good quality deli styled food at all hours of the day.
  8. spent half my New York vacation eating here, the sandwiches were so good.
  9. Amazing food, amazing prices, amazing staff
  10. Make your way over to Sarge's for an authentic New York Deli experience, complete with tongue in the window!
  11. The food is fabulous, especially the pastrami.
  12. But don't ever order bacon late at nite (either platter or in sandwiches, for that matter don't from any take out place) as it is from the morning frying & turns out hard almost like bacos, hurt my molars.
  13. The food is at least as good, if not better, than the "big name" delis the tourists flock to in droves, and while it would be nice for Sarge's to get the extra business, the fact that Sarge's is a bit of a secret means you're unlikely to be stuck behind s
  14. Tuna salad was too soft, and the bread was stale.
  15. The sandwiches are stacked high and the pastrami is the best I've eve.
  16. The corned beef and pastrami are excellent, much less fatty than those big tourist places around Times Square.
  17. I'd highly recommend the brisket sandwich with gravy.
menu variety
50.0% positive
  1. However the staff were really great, explaining all the menu items as we were obviously out-of-towners.
  2. Big menu, a lot to choose from
  3. Late nite omelletes are not good here, there is no variety!
  4. They have 100 sandwhiches on their menu and they serve stale bread?
overall

  1. ... not one of those 'big name' places, but a good place that locals come to.

  3. However the staff were really great, explaining all the menu items as we were obviously out-of-towners.
  4. The waitress was friendly and attentive, but the grapefruit juice that we ordered turned out to be a Tropicana grapefruit juice DRINK---not juice---and came to the table in its original bottle.
  5. Amazing food, amazing prices, amazing staff
  6. The two people who had omelets liked them, but the blintzes that I had were only fair and served too cool.
  7. The service is friendly, employees very helpful, and the prices seemed fair to me.
  8. It seems like this is a place the locals like and the people working here liked it too.
  9. The prices were reasonable, the service good, the decor typical NY deli (that's a good thing).

Rude manager lost a $300/month customer!

by Aaron Rosen at Citysearch

I've been eating at Sarge's for many years and have always loved the food...the cheese blintzes are amazing, excellent matzoh brie, authentic stuffed cabbage...some of the best deli food in the city. Regardless, after a recent experience with Lisa the manager I will not be returning. Her behavior was not only unprofessional, but bordering on libelous; I've never encountered a manager of any business so completely inept and abrasive.

Anthony Bourdain should visit this place!

by artiejohnn at Citysearch

ThIs is by FAR THE BEST DELI FOR PASTRAMI IN NYC. I am an avid fan of anthony bourdain's show no reservations, watch it all the time, i am also a lover of killer pastrami, well he was on a typical adventure eating his favorite bone marrow. To thank this guy for the best marrow he has eaten, he told him that when he got back to NYC he was going to send him a pastrami sandwich (also his favorite nyc sandwich) from the 2nd ave deli. Wow that struck a bell, yummy! So i went to give it a try and wow i was totaly disapointed, fatty, greasy, soggy..... Sorry Anthony not the best in NYC. GO TO SARGE'S Mr BOURDAIN and have your palette pleased with the best lean delish pastrami you ever ate!

BTW if you are concerned about fat you can request extra lean and they will remove what little fat is there! WOW where can you get that done in a deli! and if you are not a pastrami fan try the sarges favorite delish brisket served over a potato pancake smothered with gravy! and a side of apple sauce, btw it comes with soup as a special for linch for around 10 bucks!

Enjoy this incredible deli, might see ya there i go there every time i am on the east side of manhattan!
