Editorial Review for Madison Hotel on the Park – by Gayot.com

The Scene
Upon walking into the sterile lobby it would be understandable to mistake this hotel for a hospital. The reception area is hidden behind a glass kiosk; combined with the plain, off-white walls and desolate decor, it's not very inviting. The unfriendly staff doesn't help much either. This hotel is popular with European and African travelers who probably couldn't find another place to stay.

The Details
The 74 rooms are decorated with a mishmash of thrift store-like furniture. Still, the couches, and more important, the beds, are comfortable enough. Some of the accommodations are surprisingly spacious. All rooms are clean and have private bathrooms, air conditioning and color TVs.

This hotel is a great option for budget travel in the City. It's very close to 456 and NQRW subway lines, 15 short blocks from Grand Central, and a short walk to Union Square, etc. Unlike another poster, we did not find the lobby scary or the hotel to be only for savvy travelers. The service was courteous and helpful, and the free-breakfast was yummy if you appreciate a good bagel or egg sandwich. Our room and floor didn't smell like smoke at all. Everything was very clean and comfortable. The bed was good quality, and there was a TV and refrigerator. We've stayed in quite a few hotels in Manhattan over the years, and prices have gotten insane, even for dirty and inconveniently located motels. We had no interest in sharing a bathroom and insist on cleanliness, so this hotel, although it may seem expensive for any other city, really is a great deal and was a terrific central location for our NYC siteseeing.

Pros: location, value, cleanliness

Cons: limited amenities

Upsides: inexpensive for NYC, especially with spring special of $61/nt inclusive. Room was tiny and clean, linens were clean. Hotel location is convenient -- only 2 blocks from either the NRQW or 456 subways. Unfortunately, smoking is permitted, even in the hallways. Try to ask for a nonsmoking floor. Downsides were scary lobby with front desk agents behind bulletproof glass; tiny elevator (although it must have been renovated since it runs fast now); and room keys with the hotel address and room number stamped on the keychain. For savvy travelers only who know how to deal with security issues.

Pros: inexpensive, good location, has everything U need

Cons: scary lobby, bare bones amenities, security issues
