Waste of my money. A horrible experience for me last time I visited this hotel. I booked my room two days in advance before arriving here, but upon arrival, they stated that there was no room available. When I forced the issue, they finally gave me a room that was less than totally clean. The only positive note was that the management offered a discount on my next room reservation.

i love this hotel.. i was in town for a short visit from switzerland with my two dogs. As an ex-NYer, there were tons of friends I wanted to catch up with. The Affinia concierge discussed room options with me. Housekeeping made up the sofa bed for overnight guests. Dogs were treated like king and queen. Our room had a lovely balcony. I ordered wine deliveries and several restaurant deliveries and everything went perfectly smoothly. The price was amazing too. Highly recommended.

amazing suite!. I went on an overnight in NYC and stayed at the Affinia 50. I highly recommend the one bed room suite. if you can splurge get the deluxe room with the balcony. We got there and to our suprise we had a room #1705 that had a wrap around terrace. This was no balcony, it was better!! It had three seperate doors onto this huge terrace, one door was in the bedroom! It was great! Overlooking the busy streets we were entranced watching the passing cars and taxis. The hotel is a non smoking hotel, but the terrace allowed for that as long as you clean up after yourself. We ordered the "passion package" and were very pleased with rose petals on the bed, a basket of assorted chocolates and candles and a bottle of champagne. The service here was extremely friendly, the door man "Manny" literally ran down the street to hail a cab for us; the front desk service was all smiles and accomodating. Full self service kitchen in every room, complementary coffee, Aveda bath product and the plushest bathrobes. Top Notch!!

Great place to stay on weekends!. This hotel was very inexpensive for a weekend stay! If you're a business person expect to pay a nice price for a business day stay! The room was immaculately clean, the people at the door and in the lobby were extremely helpful. The bed is ultra comfy and the rooms are very spacious. I've stayed at the W Hotel in Times Square and the regular 2 bed room was 1/2 the size of my 1 bed room at the Affinia 50! I was impressed with the quality of the hotel and the location is good as well. You can walk to several museums and there are plenty of options restaurant wise in the area....

Expect something to go wrong!. I have had several negative experiences with the Affinia 50. I have attempted to change the date of check in on the phone, resulting in a complete cancellation of the resevation (which we didn't find out until we arrived!). I have also requested that an amenity be sent to a guest staying with them. After the runaround of 8 or so transfers, my order was never sent! They have an antiquated username/password system on their website, with no way for you or them to retrieve your username/password when asked. They supposedly sent my request to their outside IT company and no one ever got back to me. If you like people who brush you off and transfer you to the next guy, go for it.

Great for large groups!. We stayed at the Affinia 50 and requested a 2-bedroom suite (hard to come by in NYC). Not only was the suite HUGE, it was clean and very affordable ... we even had wrap-around balcony to enjoy the views! The staff was friendly and helpful, and they made the coordination of mulitiple travel schedules and individual requests seem like a breeze. I will definitely stay here again in the future.

Not good for long stays. I booked the Shelburne for my mother who was visitng new york, thinking it would be a good long-term stay option as it is affordable and in a safe neighborhood. The staff was rude and unprofessional, making her feel uncomfortable and unwanted. Seeing as how she was staying for a month and giving them excellent business, you would think it would be the opposite. My mother is quiet, undemanding, and hardly even there. It was as if they resented her for staying there. Unless you are looking for an affordable place to stay for a couple of nights, I would absolutely not recommend the Shelburne

Pleasant & Homey. Stayed here over July Fourth weekend 2003. Got a very nice suite for a decent price, perfect for socializing with another copuple who also had a smaller room in the Shelburne. I saw the rooftop sign, but we were not discouraged. The rooftop bar is closed for renovations, but we and a hundred friends went up to watch the fireworks in the East River (with Empire and Chrysler Bldgs behind us). Great view without the hassle of walking to the uber-crowded FDR. Rooms were pleasant in a faded, dated but very clean way. Not a ton of restaurants and nightlife nearby, but it was quiet. One of the elevators was in and out of order, making getting to the high floors a hassle, but the staff was very friendly/helpful.

Perfect -- except for the roof. The Shelburne is friendly without being pushy, and cosy but not at all small. The "kitchenettes" are great -- it's nice to have someone do your dishes for you! The location is absolutely perfect, with Grand Central a few blocks away.

My only complaint is that when you go up to the top floor, there's a sign near the door to the roof that says "The rooftop terrace is intended for guests on the 16th floor only. It is not for general guest use." Naturally, we ignored the sign and enjoyed the view, but how ridiculous is that rule?! If I'm going to pay that much, I'm going to go out on the roof!

Fabulous. The Shelburne was perfect! Spacious, clean, and curteous. You rarely hear a good review about a hotel, especially in NY. I highly recommend this hotel!
