The Scene – It's easy to understand why more people have heard of Nobu than Kuruma. For one thing, the restaurant isn't easy to find--only a small sign on street level gives it away. For another, Kuruma isn't particularly sexy--sure it's exclusive, but instead of flash, Kuruma exudes an earthy, elemental feel with elegant paper screens and wood and stone details. The crowd is a mix of well-off Americans and Japanese, but the restaurant has a longstanding reputation for serving all patrons well. – – The Food – On this Japanese sushi menu, gloriously fresh fish is served…

Over Priced

by rayne42

Fish was very good, but small meal for two = $240? Come on, give me a break. Also, I like prompt service, but if we did not sip our sake, they would have hustled us out after seven minutes. Too Expensive foe what you get.

  • Pros: Fresh, Authentic Sushi
  • Cons: Insanely High Prices, Grubby

Amazing place for lunch!

by djdonovan

It can be very easy to run up a bill at Kuruma if you don't know what you are doing (I guess that could be said for any high end sushi place), but it can also be very easy to experience the amazing sushi on a budget. My fiance and I come here regularly and are able to spend less then $80 for sushi lunch specials with beverages. The assortment you get is perfect and will leave you satisfied, especially with an extra Unagi Maki. Lunch is the way to go to enjoy Kuruma as a first timer and won't break your wallet. Ginger and Wasabi are home made and delicious. The fish is always perfect and as fresh as can be. Be sure to make a reservation even for lunch to play it safe. Service is perfect. I love trying new places, but this is one place I will always come back to.

  • Pros: Amazing fish, traditional place, and great service.
  • Cons: Pricey if you go a'la cart.

Not the best, but good

by mr_meursault

This place is certainly hard to find, to the point that you would never just walk in off the street if you weren't planning on coming there. The decor tasteful and understated. The staff has a good command of English. We came here for lunch, with a reservation, and sat at the sushi bar. The place was almost empty. We got the $60 lunch special, which consisted of about 8 pieces of sushi and a roll. The fish was of very good quality, but served in a fairly unimaginative way. The chef didn't even brush the fish with sauce. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, although I thought that certain items (cuttlefish, sea urchin) could not compare to a couple of the truly top places. Although I enjoyed my meal, I would not come back here. Why would I? I can get a tastier meal at Yasuda for just over half of what I paid here.

  • Pros: Good fish
  • Cons: Too expensive for what it is
