We get back to New York 2-3 times a year. The Comfort Diner is an oasis within the busy confines of New York City. The place looks pretty authentic, the food is excellent and well priced. I just wish the wait staff was rude or at least had the New York 'I don't give a damn attitude'. I suppose no place is perfect.

My wife and I went to Comfort Diner for breakfast on a recent Saturday morning. After being seated, it took forever to even have a waitress come to take our order. And once we'd ordered, it took forever to get our food. And it's not like we ordered anything that takes a long time. I ordered eggs with biscuits and gravy; my wife ordered a so-called Belgian waffle. The biscuits were fairly dense and defnitely not fresh. The gravy was way too sparse--a thin coating that left me with a mound of dry biscuit on my plate. And for some reason there were grits next to them; another waiter said the "country breakfast" had a choice of home fries or grits, but the waitress never asked me which I wanted. I'd thought it came with homefries. My wife's waffle was not well-cooked or even approaching crispy. The one good thing I can say is that my eggs were done properly and that the homefries were actually crisp. But even there I encountered a problem; for some reason, Comfort Diner uses glass ketchup bottles with a HUGE opening. I've never seen these anywhere before. And when you turn the bottle upside-down, the ketchup rushes forth in a tsunami onto your plate. Why don't they get the squeeze bottles that other restaurants use? Or at least the old-style glass bottles with the smaller opening? The prices were OK on some things, like my combination breakfast. But my wife's lone, limp waffle was $6.50 and came with no sides at all! Around the corner at 2nd and 44th, John's Diner offers a waffle with coffee and bacon for around the same price. And coffee at Comfort Diner is $2.25. A side of bacon is $3.50. Ridiculous. I think they get away with these prices because of their cutesy diner atmosphere. But Johns, Sarge's (3rd and 37th), and Bloom's (Lex and 40th) are a much better deal.
Pros: Uh...location I guess?
Cons: Slow service, lousy breakfast food
