In Short – This sprawling, bilevel extravaganza, with its white tile floor, glistening shellfish displays, deco light fixtures and bargeload of piscine art around the oval bar, is a cheerful, clamorous spot for quick drinks or a full meal. The menu offers every fish preparation imaginable: chowders, gravlax, fried shrimp, and sauteed fish in a variety of sauces are just the tip of the iceberg. The key lime pie is a house favorite.
Not a Happy Place
by priscilla rose at Citysearch
I love oysters and in every city I travel to, I try to find the ultimate spot. The $1 oysters are a bargain but I'd rather pay more to be in an an establishment were the staff seems at least a little happy. I still came back the next day for lunch and heard the owner yelling at a waitress in front of the customers in a way that makes me wonder why anyone would want to work there and now I know why the staff is so miserable. I ordered some items off the menu and thought my food was flavorless and over-priced.
- Pros: Oyster Happy Hour
- Cons: unfriendly environment
One of the worst restaurants in NY
by ajk1 at Citysearch
I've been to my fair share of restaurants in NY, and this is by far the worst. We went for dinner and got typical seafood (calamari, seafood pasta, chocolate cake) and all of it was horrible. It wasn't that the food wasn't fresh... it was just made poorly. How can a seafood restaurant mess up on calamari? It was so bad that every time I pass the restaurant, I have to comment on how bad it is.
- Pros: Ambiance was average
- Cons: Food and price (not expensive but not worth the $$)
Quality seafood, good value for the money. great service. convenient but expensive parking,
by Petertimber at Citysearch
My family and I have frequented Docks in Midtown Manhattan site for several years now never being disappointed by the service nor the quality of the seafood served. The restaurant gives good value for the money. The waiters and staff are friendly and on the ball. Seating patrons seems to be "tenseful" unless area is specifically requested. Once you get seated the scene ameliorates.
- Pros: quality, service, value for money, nearby parking convenient
- Cons: some portions small, others adequate. parking for 2 hour dinner not subsidized
The Details on Dock's Oyster Bar
Where to Sit:
If you're looking for relative tranquility in this boisterous scene, consider the back dining room, which has long fabric banquettes and plenty of tables for two. This is usually the last space seated, so you'll have to ask for it.
What to Drink:
Plenty of seafood-friendly wines, including all of the sauvignon blancs, and most of the dryer chardonnays. Prices begin at $18 and cluster in the $30s.
