“The ambiance is extremely comforting and tranquil, almost spiritual even with its bamboo and elegant earthly decor.”
“wanted to start the new year fresh so I went to Valentino for a great dry cut.”
“So here I entertain myself every weekend by reading the stuff hairdressers have fed to their clients but hey i just want a great flattering haircut for under a million dollars- I end up spending my hard earned but unsaved $200 on Gabriel at the Workshop (”
“Even if I moved to Hawaii, I'd travel to have my hair cut by Gabriel and, in fact, there are people who travel great distances to see him.”

“am going to be a long term client now and am so grateful for my most excellent hair cut.”
I have been going to Gabriel for almost
six years & he is incredible... I have had one bad haircut after the next & he successfully corrected it & makes it look fuller with more volume! He is totally focused on his work & puts his heart & soul into his work! Tremendous dedication & devotion to his clients & he is of a very healing nature & makes you feel well,
grrreat!
The person who wrote the bad review is an idiot who got a bad haircut from someone else he tried his best to fix the mess & she is, "the fox & ther sour grapes," disgruntled by someone else's bad work & wants to blame it on a "hair genius!"
I highly recommend Gabriel as the end & be all of haircutters!
I've been getting my hair styled at Sahag by Karmela since 2002. I have never had a bad hair cut. Every time I leave there I get a many comment from people about how great my hair looks. I could complain about the high price, but hey, it's Madson Ave @ East 49th Street, and Sahag is one of the top studios with many celebrity client.
GABRIEL IS A HAIR GENIUS.
I normally don't write reviews but instead get a kick out of what everyone else thinks. However, I decided that after reading the poison pen review I must set the record straight. At least 5 of the rave reviews for Gabriel have been written by my girlfriends-real women with real hair that looks really amazing from Gabriel's cuts. Francesca was the first to go to him several years again and we have all followed since. I myself have suffered from a bad cut from other hairdressers but it happens. Sometimes I am just not happy with myself and nothing looks good on me.
However, I have never had a bad turn with him.
Gabriel has always listened to me when I wanted a dramatic new look or just a trim. He does beautiful work and even my friend that moved to Maryland still comes back to get his cut that lasts for 4-5 months.
So while I don't know if he gives a bad cut now and then I do know that our reviews are real and honest.
HORRIBLE - GABRIEL IS AWFUL-Are Good Reviews Real or Ads?.
My hair looks terrible. When I look in the mirror (whichI now avoid) I want to scream. Gabriel made me look
old and ugly ( I am not beautiful but this cut accentuates every flaw). All he needed to do was blend in the top of my hair that was too short for the rest of my hair by adding another layer. I had really pretty long curly hair. What he DID was cut the rest of my hair shorter than the top and slanted the sides backwards. This is one of the worse cuts of my life. I have never written reviews before. However, I went to Gabriel based on the other "reviews" on this site.
I had been a customer of John Sahag for many years. I stayed with the
salon until a fews years after John died and my stylist changed salons. Out of respect to Sahag' s memory and skill the salon should be closed down or at least have the name changed.
I got a bad haircut (next to how I look now it was really good) a few months ago at another salon. I waited four months to let it grow out and figured I would try the Sahag salon again. HUGE mistake. I chose one of the stylists who has worked there for years.
( However, I think some of the glowing reviews of him on this site a not from customers.) Normally the place flat irons your hair before cutting. He refused to do it with my hair. Some of my hair was pinned up so I could not really see everything that is being cut. I did ask to keep it as long as possible. After having my hair wet I told the stylist I really disliked the cut. My long curly hair is now short on the sides and slants backwards- completely unflattering and it ages me enormously He walked away and said he was getting the manager.
He did not suggest fixing the hair. The manager has this condescending tone about (I also think she may be the owner.) I do confess that I had a little bit of a meltdown. I needed to look good for an event I am going to. However, my hair looks dreadful. It also AGES me about ten years. I did notice that most of the clients of my stylist were older ( I am sort of getting there myself) with what can best be described as a "post middle-aged" short hair cut that my mother use to wear. That should have been an alert.
I have two sort of chunks cut out on the side of my hair. Leave it to say
I will be waiting another few months to let it grow out.
In the interest of full disclosure, I was not charged for the cut by the manager. I would much have preferred to have gotten a good , or even decent cut, and paid for it.
Reader beware- if you see glowing reviews for a salon question who is writing them. I suspect there will be several "glowing" reviews to bury this one.
Gabriel is AMAZING!!!.
This salon has given me the best hair cut of my life several times... I have recently moved away from NYC and am out of state, so I don't go here anymore, but after having my hair cut in my new location, I am seriously missing Gabriel's talent.
Gabriel is sweet, fun, and incredibly talented. The first 2 hair cuts I got here were basically trims, and I was shocked as to how much care he put in to the cut. I was sitting in the chair for 55 minutes at least and he was cutting the whole time... he looked like Edward Scissor hands he was moving so fast (they do dry cuts)... He cross checked and cross checked to make sure it was all perfect, and he took weight out of it, and made sure it was up to his high standards... They then flat iron it and it looks fab so you don't even need to have them wash it and blow it out if you don't want to. They have an apprentice blow it out for you and they are all very cute as well. Expect to spend at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours at the salon though, they are thorough.
The 3rd haircut I got here was a huge chop. I donated 12 inches to locks of love and Gabriel made sure I didn't look like a "lion" as I call it when sometimes you chop your hair and it all poofs out b/c of the weightlessness. They also took care of mailing my hair to locks of love for me. Gabriel was able to help me decide what would look best on my head and I was so pleased.
After getting a regular hair cut at a place by my new home... I was kinda upset because the girl didn't even seem like she was paying any attention and I went home and had to trim it again myself. Made me surely appreciate the Sahag hair cut....
I took a star away only for 2 small reasons...
1. price is high... it cost me $200 + tax to see Gabriel who is a senior stylist... and then you must tip and the hair wash girl needs a tip too...so all in all... it cost me $260...
2. it does take a REALLY long time for the cut/blow/dry... so i basically have to clear my afternoon to make the appointment here.
That being said, Gabriel said since they cut the hair dry, the style grows out the way you cut it so it won't loose shape and you can wait much longer between cuts...so I only went ever 6-8 months anyway...and after having a crummy hair cut... I would gladly go back and pay 200 dollars to have such a good cut.
Next time I am in NY I will be making a trip to get to that Salon!
doug. i have gotten my hair colored in many shops and Doug Matthews is by far the best at recreating my nautral "red" color- he starts with a base color, adds hilights and lowlights and finishes with a glaze, it lasts for much longer, too
Layer by Layer-Gabriel's the Best. I haven't cut my hair for the last 8 months. Not because I couldn't afford it. Instead I had t let it grow out since the last hairstylist gave me layers. Layers? They weren't layers-instead he cut my hair short on the top and then cut the ends-yes it was a sophisticated overpriced mullet! During these long winter months, I decided that I would research my next hairstylist as if I were trying to secure employment with the CIA-I went on every review site, looked at a million websites and searched youtube for edgy beautiful cuts. Lo and behold Gabriel kept popping up. I liked that there is a great video of his stuff on youtube. He has diversified hairstyles on the Sahag website and most of the reviews on here were really terrific. So I rolled the dice and came up a winner. Gabriel was able to cut layers-real feminine cascading layers-into my hair and I am thrilled. It's the first time I have adored a haircut in years and I swear I walk with more confidence now. Hair does matter and the teachers in high school were right-doing your homework pays off.
You Name It-I've Been There.
Yes-to all the trendy and of the moment salons in NY. Some have been terrific and some have underwhelmed me with there "you're lucky we will take fit you in" attitude. However, over the years, I remember that I received more compliments on my hair when I went to Gabriel at John Sahag- so I decided I would venture back and see if this magician had any tricks left up his sleeves.
Gabriel has not only gotten sexier with age but his cutting is even more extraordinary than I recalled. I walked out feeling better about my looks than I have in years- my hair had movement and I felt as if I wasn't trying to look like someone from Gossip Girl.
I realize experience really matters when it comes to hair.
Also, it's refreshing to walk into a Madison Ave salon and be treated by the receptionist with cheerfulness.
Doug Macintosh - Color Genius. I have been seeing Doug Macintosh for my color for several years now. He is ALWAYS consistent. This last week he amazingly layered the colors of the rainbow into an amazing platinum blond he created for me (I am really a dark haired brunette.) I love my hair and I think it effing rocks!! It makes people happy everywhere I go! I absolutely admire Doug's ability, consistency and creativity. If you have a chance to get your hair done by him, take it!
