Editorial Review for The Amish Market – by Liz Zack

The Scene
Catering to Hell's Kitchen's growing population of residents who prefer to say they live in Clinton, Amish Market offers a quality selection of specialty goods, including a respectable produce section. Beautiful baskets hang from the ceiling, and blue and while tiles cover the walls. Customers stop by for lunch or to grab gourmet ingredients for the evening meal.

The Goods
White-jacketed counter help pass custom-made, custom-decorated cheesecakes over the glass case. Deeper in the store, beautiful fruit spills out of wicker baskets and cheese is arranged by consistency: soft, semi-soft, goat. The line for the deli department can be fairly daunting during lunch rush, and the fresh seafood department is meticulously maintained.

This is one the best places I've been to in NYC. It's clean. The customer service is excellent. Their shelves are stocked with gourmet items. If you're into buying organic, they have packaged items and fruits/vegetable/herbs that are organic as well. They have a butcher section with beautiful cuts of meat displayed. All fresh looking. They also have fresh fish (no smell!). I bought some fresh fruit from them and thought I had died and gone to Heaven. The peaches were incredible. The vegetables were all great looking. Looked like they were just picked. They also have hot food and fresh salads. Their pizza is probably better than more than half the pizza places in NYC. The hot buffet looked awesome, although I haven't tried it yet. They also had a grill going next to the pizza station. Not sure what they were cooking there but the smell that was wafting over was making my mouth water. I'd bet almost anything that the 2 negative reviews are from people that work for Whole Foods or some other store that's in competition with Amish Market. Oh, and it IS run by Amish people. If you know anything about the way the Amish live their lives you would know that they can't use or touch certain types of machinery and electronics. So, obviously, you are not going to see an Amish person behind the cash register. If you see the butcher grinding meat with an electric grinder he/she is not Amish. They can't man a lot of the positions in the store simply due to their beliefs. But the place is run by the Amish.

Pros: Selection of hot foods. Fresh fruits and veg. Prices are good considering the quality of goods and location.

Cons: Can get a bit crowded at lunch time.

I've been to many Food markets within the city but i havent had a relaxing shopping experience. This place has variety of goods & services. You can always ask a worker for their opinion about a product.Customer service is great. I know that every department has their experience if i had questions.I can go there for hours and just find newer items everyday that i have never seen or heard of before which makes the place very unique. Bakery,Tossed Salad & Pizza fresh everyday and yummy! Deli and fish have variety of fresh ingredients! ohh and the buffet!!! yummy food! mixture of countries but yet simple & tasty! You can go to a store who has the products & no friendly workers or you can go to a store where there are friendly workers but nothing you want! this place AMISH market has everything a customer would want! Talking about it makes me want to get a slice of pizza and ON THE SEEN prepared FRESH SUSHI!!! see you there!

Pros: you pay for what you get! high price but worth it cause everything is 100% FRESH!

Cons: everything looks so good that when you to buy 1 item you end up with 10! :D
