The Scene – The "Arte" at this teeming Italian triumph is represented by giant sketches of proboscises and other (R-rated) body parts, set off by brash walls of yellow and aquamarine. Typical of owner Shelly Fireman (he also owns Redeye Grill on the same block), the tables are neighborly, the lights unforgiving and the noise level, at times, numbing. Upbeat and capable servers add to the festive scene. – – The Food – On this Mediterranean menu, don't miss the carciofi alla Giudea--fried baby artichokes with parchment-thin crispy leaves. Pastas are as imaginative…

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!

by sftonycchick

You gotta try the Margarita Pizza! I know, I know...pizza everywhere in nyc, BUT this was the thinnest, most crispy holy trinity -crust-sauce and cheese-of pizza perfection!!! I LOVE the wine list-Sonoma Cutrer and Stags Leap-wow! Perfect! Coming from SF,being a bit of a wine snob, its so pleasent to see quality wines vs. just ordering by color as I am used to doing in NYC. No wonder this place was packed!

  • Pros: food-wine-staff
  • Cons: so crowded

Best Restaurant in NYC

by ericknyc

I shuddered when I read the the upstate NYer's hostile words about my favorite NYC restaurant. If they were only wise enough to TRY the Veal Parmigiana, they would not only have tasted one of the most flavorful, tender, delicious veal ever, but they'd eat their words regarding portion size. I usually have to take half home for lunch the next day, it's so awesomely large.

They also have fabulous pasta dishes, most notably the Lobster Linquine Carbonara, the Agnolotti spinach raviolis, and the to-die-for Tordelli stuffed with veal and topped with bolognese.

As for the service, only once-- after a Carnegie concert-- when they obviously got slammed with a full dining room of hungry cranky people [the concert was bad!]-- I got crappy service from a waiter who seemed to not even care to apologize for it. But that's one incident in DOZENS of visits I have made to this wonderful gastronomic delight of a place. The waiters are smart and talented and fun, and consistently regale me with their sharp knowledge of the menu and wines, and ability to help me decide what to order. They are especially helpful in sorting through the long list of excellent antipasto items... which you can order off the menu... although I recommend you "point and pick" your antipasto course-- the waiter gives you a slip of paper with your table number on it, you walk up to the antipasto bar, and the friendly guy behind the counter assembles your plate as you select each item. Then the waiter brings the plate to the table.

Yes, the prices are high. Hello. NYC rent is a heck of a lot higher than a small upstate NY town. Save your extra dollars in an envelope marked Trattoria Dell Arte-- and when you've amassed a few hundred, take yourself and a friend out for a dining experience where money will be no object-- and worth every penny!

  • Pros: Best food in NYC-- pastas, meats, pizzas with paper-thin crusts, GREAT service, friendly staff.
  • Cons: Noisey when crowded, expensive.
