  1. The food was horrible.
  2. Good rice and beans
  3. thought the chicken was moist and tender and the rice and beans were delicious.
  4. So while my friend paid $6 for his plate, I paid $11.50 for essentially the same amount of rice and beans, plus some stale plantains.
  5. Being from Brazil, I am generally more critical then the average customer; however, the food here is great!
  6. Chicken and rice (arroz con pollo) is great - the chicken is pulled off the bone and the whole dish is very savory and moist.
  7. If you order rice and beans and plantains or vegetables, it's a few dollars more, but get this: they give you less of each item!
  8. The food was so-so, not the best Brazilian, but defintely not worth the slow and rude service
  9. If you order just rice and beans, it's about $6.
  10. The food isn't great.
  11. The food was good, but the portions were so small.
  12. great food
  13. The food was good though.
  14. An authentic, divey Brazilian gem in midtown
  15. The food was fabulous.
  16. It is so small it hardly qualifies as a"restaurant"-as we see it in NYC-, but the food is simply delicious and the service _done by "natives"-was above average for the prices they charge.
  17. The food was great!

good food, very overpriced

by sunnynero8

I went here again last night after not going for over a year, and the quality of the food has dropped a bit. The prices, on the other hand, have not.

This is what I had previously written about the place:

"All of the food is amazing and they give you unlimited amounts of rice n beans. Only drawbacks are the really small seating area."

That holds somewhat true, but there are way too many other places serving very food of the same quality, at a much lower cost. I wouldn't recommend this place - it's nothing special. Not to mention that it's almost sad how empty it is, and the harsh draft that you can feel no matter where you are sitting in the small room - every time the delivery boy comes in and out.

  • Pros: great food!
  • Cons: pricey, small seating area

An authentic, divey Brazilian gem in midtown

by jennab522

I have been coming to this place for the past two years, a gem I found from reading Frommers when I first moved to NYC in 2004. This is my quintessential "date" place. The atmosphere is cute, cozy and relaxed. On the walls, are pictures of celebrities from Brazil, reviews from magazines and books, and some ethnic Brazilian artwork and cute Brazilian knick-knacks and instruments. The music is always amazing, whether it be samba or girl from inpanema type of music. The entire staff is from Brazil and the owner often goes to the tables to chat with customers. The food is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, and it's not too pricey. My favorites are the salmon and the arroz con pollo. They also carry Guarana, a Brazilian soda, which I am now addicted to. The staff is friendly most of the time but sometimes absent. The place is tiny, and you are in elbow room with the table next to you, but the positives way outweigh the negatives. Not a place for kids, but a great "date" place.

  • Pros: Ambiance, food
  • Cons: Extremely small

Quaint, colorful decor and savory offerings make Rice and Beans a certifiable cultural experience. A little pricey for pollo, but your pallate won't be left unsatisfied.
