What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 25, 2012

Reviewing 21 is like reviewing Mount Rushmore; it doesn't matter what you say, because it's a national monument. The last and greatest of the great speakeasies of the 1920s, it morphed into one of the supreme power scenes of midcentury New York and still has much of its old power. The food is much better than you might expect, and if you want a definitive martini, this is the place to have it.

Burger King would have been more satisfying and friendlier.... From reading all the reviews it seems obvious a lot of the five star reviews are from people associated with the restaurant...Here are a couple things to point out about 21 club....1) there is a lot of history here and the decorations are interesting/original 2) 20% of the staff is incredibly polite (the men by the entrance and barkeep mostly) meanwhile the rest of the staff seems annoyed by your existence 3) during restaurant week, the restaurant makes a clear statement by its lack of quality in food and service that they do not want your cheap business 4) during regular business days expect to pay at least $400 for a decent dinner per person, however, do not expect for them to be overly polite....

This is my first review on Citysearch and I really did go out of my way here so other's do not make the same mistake I did. Save your cash and go someplace where you will feel more welcome.

nice place. What a fun experience it was here. Good food, great wine, nice conversation. It's family style, so we had a little seafood, shrimp, short ribs (my favorite). And the wine was excellent! The service was very attentive; they noticed details and took care of things. I'd say they discretely hovered.

One of My Favourite Restaurants..... I gotta say the 21Club is one of my favorite restaurants. I get the Marinated Octopus Salad , and really, it cannot be beat.

I did go here recently and they have changed the name of some things and they too my favorite wine off the list :( but the salad is still as good.

It is dimly lit so it would make a nice place to go on a date. I would recommend to anyone..

One Word I Hate...Prohibition!. I enjoyed it. It was nice to go to a place with such a heralded history. The wine selection was amazing and this place is known for their unbelievable hamburgers. I also enjoyed learning about the 2-ton door that was triggered with a meat skewer to open. Easy place to get in and out of due to the location also. Great history and a good vibe here. Service was great also. Check it out you won't be disappointed. I'm going back there this winter. Can't wait!

Read the article "One Word I Hate...Prohibition" on Greenfaucet. The guy there did a great review of this place in the Lifestyle section.

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!. The food was excellant and the staff very efficient. The decor fun to look at just wish you got a little more history about the place from the staff. We were told to try and get a tour of the wine cellar but there was a party there and we were not able to see it. We sat at Humphrey Bogarts table and got a kick out of that!! The wine list is a little lacking for local wines but otherwise would definitely eat there again. It is extremely pricy so bring lots of money!!

You have to go there! Drinks and meat are AMAZING.. OMG! This place is AWESOME! Nothing in NYC is exactly like it. It's like that warm feeling you have when you are with your family. They are so fancy without being pretentious. They take care of every single guest no matter who you are. This place feels like money, smells like money and makes you feel like you own the world! (Snake hand, You're Fired! - HA HA, yes he eats there) The service is outstanding and the drinks,... be careful because they are REAL! drinks!! (I am from the South and believe me we know what a real drink is.) The food was so delicious and the meats prepared to a T (we also know our meat)! Lastly, the decor is so quality: the materials, the carpeting, artwork,... everthing. I just can't get over how awesome this place is. It's like one of the few old-fashioned, polite places left in NYC. You have to go there once and then you will be HOOKED. Cheers!

Great example of ultra fine dinning. This is New York City at it's BEST!!. Everything on the menue is outstanding. When you come here don't worry about the cost of the food, yea its expensive, but there a lot of other Restaurants in this City that cost more. Yes VIPS do get treated differently, thats because they come here several times a month or even more. If you want do something special in NYC, do it here.

Tipping here is at least 18% and more like 25% .Have lunch or after theater dinner here, you won't get rushed.

Known one time as the most expensive hamburger in NYC(use to be $21.00 now $30.00 there is another place that charges $10.00 more). Steak Tartar and Ceasar salads are perfect to the T!!!!

I took my son here for his 21st birthday for lunch .According to him this was the best gift I could have given him that day .

Reservations are must .

Meet you at 21. My daughter and I were in NY for her birthday and went to 21 before a show. It was definitely old school. The food was excellent for the price - we had the $40 pre fixe. The lamb appetizier and sea bass entree were delicious. My daughter had the chicken which was tender and juicy. You definitely got the impression that the wait staff was waiting for the after theater crowd. Our waiter was attentive but didn't seem to care that we have a great experience at 21. I'm glad I went - it might be fun to go back later in the evening for a nightcap at the bar. But I doubt I'll go back to eat again - too many other good choices in NYC. We were watching Breakfast at Tiffyany's the other night and my daughter heard "Holly" say she was going to 21! Very cool.

Upstairs at '21' is the place to be pampered!!. My mother and I took our second annual trip to NY this past September. We decided to do the experience right and took in a Broadway show and a nice dinner. The dinner was more that we expected at a price that was amazing! For $40 we had a fabulous pre-fixe 3-course menu (or they have another larger selection menu available for $70). The food was excellent, but the service was second to none. The head waiter (I heard him say he was the official servicer for 'Upstairs at 21') was actually the key ingredient to our wonderful dining experience. He was the best at everything he did and truly made this 5 star restaurant experience an experience of a lifetime. I recommend this restaurant (specify 'Upstairs at 21') and I promise you will love every minute of it!
