Molyvos

A visit to Molyvos is like a visit to Greece

  • True Foods and Wines of Greece
  • 1 Block South of Carnegie Hall
  • Pre and Post Theater Available

Molyvos' menu is built upon the home-style cooking of Greece, with dishes elevated through the talents and professional expertise of executive chef James Botsacos. He prepares each of the authentic Greek recipes using classical Greek cooking techniques, and the superior ingredients available to him in New York, such as prime meats, greenmarket vegetables, and day boat fish, and then seasons the food with flavorful stocks and fresh herbs.

The wine list, under the keen direction of Kamal Kouiri, is unique for its depth and breadth of excellent Greek labels, and small producers from the Mediterranean whose wines deserve to be enjoyed. The bar features a list of mezes, small plates of food, designed to be paired with more than a dozen ouzos, or a choice of several satisfying Greek wines or beers.

A visit to Molyvos is like a visit to Greece, only closer.

Editorial Review for Molyvos – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
The long, cavernous space, done in warm tones and simply adorned with stenciling and old photographs, has a casual feeling without going overboard on the Hellenic themes. Service is warm and professional.

The Food
The fare is mostly traditional, with a few contemporary specials offered nightly. Molyvos serves excellent, impeccably fresh, grilled whole fish. Red snapper, porgy, sea bass and others are enhanced with just olive oil and fresh herbs. Successes include the superb rabbit stew--sweetened with pearl onions and a touch of fortified wine--and the braised lamb shanks with orzo. Dessert highlights include a moist semolina and almond cake and the racy lemon pudding.

I have eaten here many times, I love the food and usually have consistant service. Recently however the service seems lacking. The food is as good and interesting as always so go figure !. I hope they can get it together because even in a tourist part of towm Molyvos is one of my favorites.

Pros: Greek food done well

Cons: Service is slipping.

Molyvos is something you wouldn't expect from the outside. The outside has a big banner that reads MOLYVOS and doesn't prepare you for the fine dining area that is inside the doors. The dining area is a little crowded but the atmosphere is great. Family, business, pleasure, romantic they can cover all those areas. They have a great wine list. Ask the waiter what they recommend with whatever you are planning to order. I recommend the octopodi as a appetizer. Tender octopus with a herb sauce was amazing to the taste buds. and the Hummus white bean hummus was also very delicious i wanted seconds. For the entree i had lamb. forgot what it was called but tender lamb chops was amazing. I dont think i like greek desserts that much. a little to sweet for me, but taste was great. I just couldn't have more than 2 bites. The whole meal was great from start to finish. the wait staff was very accommodating. I would go again when i have the chance.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Great food, Great Wine

Cons: lil compact dining space.
