Chef Jim Botsacos' octopus dish is the best that ever was and is. It's extremely meaty and has been a customer favorite since the restaurant debuted over a decade ago. Molyvos is Greek fine-dining. Think white tablecloths and impeccable service. The food is pricey, but you get more than enough. Order the moussaka and pair it with a strong imported ouzo.
No one talks about it anymore, but Molyvos reigned for a long time as the city's best Greek restaurant. And maybe it still is. Certainly the place took Greek cooking and modernized it before anyone else has. The food is elevated by homey and the room always comfortable and the service tight. The price is right too; a great choice in midtown.
Molyvos on Behind the Burner. I just watched a great vid about Molvos on Behind the Burner. com!
One of the best moussakas I've tasted.
We felt like Greek and since Molyvos was in between our show (Wicked) and our hotel (Le Parker Meridien), we stopped in after the show.
Since it was relatively late for us, we skipped appetizers and salads and just stuck with an entree each. I ordered Aglaias Moussaka (casserole layers of eggplant, potato, tomato, spiced ground lamb, yogurt Béchamel) and the beau ordered Kotopoulo sto Fourno (boneless pan roasted free range chicken, lemon and garlic roasted potatoes, artichokes and rosemary).
When both arrived they smelled fantastic. Digging in to the moussaka, it was honestly one of the best I've tasted. The beau's chicken was quite good as well. We ended up taking leftovers with us (fridge in the hotel, yay) and we had an amazing breakfast the next day as well. Delicious!
WORTH FORGETTING ABOUT!. This place is a tourist trap! They added 18% to my check for a party of four! And when I complained to management the response I received was that a lot of tourists do not tip so they tack on the tip! I am appalled at the rudeness and how they are trying to con tourists and discriminate against customers! DO NOT GO HERE! There are plenty of other great places in NYC!
good food freshly made.
This place was just opposite to where my friends were staying, and we all were hungry so went there. As mentioned in the other review, chicken was very nicely prepared. Service was good as expected and I like to sit in restaurant and have a nice talk with friends and not being hovered around by the service staff for asking things again and again. We had the restaurant week menu.
For Appetizers, I had Mikro Pikilia consisting of 3 diffrent
Melitzanosalata, Taramousalata and Tzatziki. My friend had Horiatiki Salata and according to him it was nice.
For Entree I had Kotopoulo Sto Fourno, chicken dish and it was one of the nicest roasted chicken I have tasted in a long time. The other one I like is the India clay roasted oven with authentic spices. And for the deset I had Ravani, the almond cake which was ok,
The only issue and even though its minor issue, they added gratuity for 3 person, even though it was listed that it will be added for more than 6 persons. These small things show what kind of management it is and my reason for 3 stars.
Great service/Good Food.
We were in NYC for new year's, but with the wind chill at 0 degrees we wimped out and didn't do Times Square. (We're from the south where it rarely dips below freezing.) So with a sudden change of plans and no dinner reservations for New Year's Eve, we tried the restaurant adjoining our hotel. (Abbocato at The Blakely). They had no table but recommended Molyvos, their sister restaurant. It was just around the corner and had a table available, so we went. I'm not a big fan of our local Greek restaurants, so we went with a "what choice do we have" attitude. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was very fresh and prepared simply so the flavor of the fresh ingredients stood on its own. I had the grilled pork chop with butternut squash and a potato pancake. My daughter had the pan roasted chicken with roasted potatoes. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. The Greek salad was a little pricey, but the tomatoes were the best I had had since last summer's vine-ripened crop. Who knew you could get a great tasting tomato in the middle of winter?
The wait staff was well trained and discreet. I never felt they were hovering or rushing us, yet our glasses never got more than half empty. We shared an order of the dessert special (which they allowed with no problem) of chocolate baklava. It was delicious. Our coffee arrived out of thin air as soon as we ordered it. The waitress did not rush us with our check. We had to ask for it.
The ambience was very nice and I did not find that the tables were crowded. I will go again, if the opportunity rises.
Beware of the additude!!!.
When we entered the restaurant we were greeted at the desk and brought to our table.
Initially the service was fine. About 15 minutes into our dining experiance the service stopped.
When I say stopped I was never asked 1- if I wanted another drink.
2- How was every thing!
3- The staff hoovered around and spent more time outside smoking than paying attention to their cliente!!
4- I emailed the restaurant and shared with them my experiance and NO REPLY!!!!
It's a shame because the food was pretty good. The owner has several places in the city as well as City Limits in White Plains.
Good food in New York is in abondance good service isn't.
Take my adviise and the sdvise of others ... take your hard earn money and go to a good restaurant where they appreciate youe business.
Molyvos on 7th Ave truely has a poor aditude towards non greek families!!!!
Grape leaves abound....
I have eaten here many times, I love the food and usually have consistant service. Recently however the service seems lacking. The food is as good and interesting as always so go figure !.
I hope they can get it together because even in a tourist part of towm Molyvos is one of my favorites.
Great Greek Cuisine!. Molyvos is something you wouldn't expect from the outside. The outside has a big banner that reads MOLYVOS and doesn't prepare you for the fine dining area that is inside the doors. The dining area is a little crowded but the atmosphere is great. Family, business, pleasure, romantic they can cover all those areas. They have a great wine list. Ask the waiter what they recommend with whatever you are planning to order. I recommend the octopodi as a appetizer. Tender octopus with a herb sauce was amazing to the taste buds. and the Hummus white bean hummus was also very delicious i wanted seconds. For the entree i had lamb. forgot what it was called but tender lamb chops was amazing. I dont think i like greek desserts that much. a little to sweet for me, but taste was great. I just couldn't have more than 2 bites. The whole meal was great from start to finish. the wait staff was very accommodating. I would go again when i have the chance.
Hair in the salad. The food and atmosphere were great. However, I was here with my girlfriend and she found a long piece of hair in her salad. Sure, mistakes happen, I get that. However, the staff (both our waiter and the manager) were smug about the whole thing. They took the salad off the bill and the table and ended up comping us a desert, but the smug way that they handled things generally left a bad taste in our mouths. That said, the food and atmosphere were good and I think that most diners would be pleased with the experience. Just watch out for the greek salad.
Nice wait staff. Very cute diningroom with tables a little too close together. The food was OK Good wait staff I woild go there again if in the mood for Greek food.
