The Scene – A universal quest: "Where can I find a restaurant in the Theater District that serves good food, has a lively and comfortable atmosphere and is inexpensive?" For nearly three decades, La Bonne Soupe has been providing just that. The colorful main dining room has all the trappings of a real bistro--red-checkered tablecloths, neighborly banquettes, amiable French waitresses--and, indeed, the soup is good. – – The Food – The soup-centric bistro menu offers plenty of familiar favorites. The more adventuresome might go for the excellent brandade de morue, a…

Good food, disrespectful to women

by Elfie K

I have been eating here for over a decade, generally during dinner hours, and have recommended this place to many friends. Great food, but no need to eat here anymore!

Last week, on International Women's Day, I was subjected to a barrage of ugly putdown words and phrases of women while eating by the over-opinionated bartender and host/owner debating why women even need to be recognized with their own day. Much sarcasm and ugly sentiment. Really negative energy.

No need for me to EVER frequent this restaurant again. My money can be much better spent in a female-friendly place, a place that respects women. DON'T EAT HERE if you care about how women are spoken about and treated when no one thinks you're listening or watching.

Great prices; be prepared to be friendly with your neighbor

by JustBeachyNY

Interesting menu, next time i'll try the soup but it was too hot outside for soup so I chose the omlette ratatouille which comes with side salad. Omlette was ok, salad dressing was very yummy.

My main complaint is how crowded the downstairs dining room is. Tiny tables so close you are sharing the conversation with your neighbor. There is an upstairs but I didn't go up there so cannot report.

I guess its so packed because of the prices, super reasonable. I'd definitely go back and check out the upstairs.

Amazing French Onion Soup & Lovely Service for a Great Price

by NYbaby87

You have got to love this place! A friend of mine (who lived is Boston) talked about it for months. So I finally gave it a show. And now I'd recommend it to all of my friends and family. I went there twice within the last month.

The soups are amazing - and they come within 5 minutes of placing your order. They are pretty big and you can easily feel full with just a soup and some bread.

My mom said that the onion soup was the 2nd best she has ever tried (and this is her favorite food in the whole world.) I'd say that it's delicious.

The fillet mignon is to die for -order it well done (it will still be medium rare) and with the cognac sauce - you won't be sorry.

You don't need a reservation for 2-4 people. They seat you immediately. And the service is impeccable. The prices are extremely reasonable. I will surely go there again for pre-theater dinner.
