The Scene
The long, wood-paneled room is minimally decorated. A small, see-through wall is stuffed with stones, and a tree festooned with lights branches out from the front desk all the way across the ceiling. Service is impeccable, good-humored and informative.
The Food
Chef Nao Sugiyama serves in the traditional kaiseki style--a kind of tasting menu consisting of between six and 12 small courses. There is extremely fresh sashimi on the menu, but most of the dishes are more exotic. Sea urchin, quail egg and Japanese yam mixed together and served in a shot glass is surprisingly delicious. Densely-flavored, almost smoky soup is poured from a teapot full of vegetables--open the lid to pull them out, too. Fatty Kobe beef imported straight from Japan is as tender as it is expensive.

Exquisite food, perfect service. Atmosphere is basic but calm and pleasant. Lived up to the hype, and worth every penny. Brought boyfriend there for dinner -- he had the modern 8 course omakase with kobe -- and he's still talking about the meal.

If you want to taste true (non-family style) Japanese food, this is it. They use finest ingredients from all over the world and cook them with excellent skill. You might feel it a little expensive and indeed it is, but you have to pay twice if you were to eat the same food in Tokyo. I strongly recommend this place.

Words cannot express how much I love this place. Go to sushi samba if you're looking for gimmicky fusiony inventive sushi. This is back to basics. Staff is friendly, Sachiko herself makes the rounds and can make great seasonal recommendations if you choose not to get the omakase. Their gomadofu is homemade and is one of the best in the city-in fact, based solely on their gomadofu I would give the place 5 stars. I'm no vegetarian but this is one of the menu highlights for me. Honestly no matter what you order, it's difficult to go wrong here. And bonus, they have kushiage. Great sake selection, they can also arrange for private sake tastings, which is fun (and informative). And like Peter D said, it's not a huge selection, but every time I've asked Sachi for a recommendation, it's been spot on.
