What People Are Saying About Topaz Thai Restaurant

In Short – Subterranean, small and wood-paneled, the restaurant serves an assortment of Thai standards to a midtown business and pre-theater constituency. Specialties of the house include sliced steak with peanut sauce, crispy duck in tamarind-pineapple sauce, a garlic-marinated half chicken and curried chicken-filled puff pastries. The array of Thai soups, including a pork wonton soup, is also popular. The lunch menu offers reduced portions at reduced prices, accompanied by steamed rice. –

  1. The food is just great at this very cozy (like 12 tables) family-run restaurant in the middle of midtown Manhattan.
  2. Good for romantic dinner, out with friends or family.
  3. Small restaurant but great atmosphere and the service is outstanding.
  4. Went there on my birthday and had a nice romantic dinner with my girlfriend in a secluded area near the window.
  5. Although extremely small, don't let the bland decor and subterrean feel fool you, these people know how to make excellent Thai food.
  6. Nicest service and atmosphere for a nice Thai Experience

  1. On an early Saturday evening, after an 11-block "stroll" on our first trip to NYC, we discovered Topaz - a charming little Thai restaurant 3 steps down, 2-tables-for-4-and-1-table-for-2 wide, about thrice as long with a bar at the back.
  2. The thai ice tea is the best I've ever tasted.

Ignored Reservation

by Bialystock

Never go there again! We had a reservation for 3 which they completely ignored. Even though we were all there on time, they would not seat us at a proper table. Turned out, they didn't like that we were only 3 for dinner. THEY would have preferred 4. There are too many choices to put up with this.

Excellent food, Tiny place.

by KhaliKhai

Been there several times. Becomes very crowded at times. Once you get a seat, the food appears fast and tastes awesome. Very tight space. Service is not that great but the food compensates for it. Reasonably priced.

  • Pros: Excellent food, Reasonable price.
  • Cons: Space is very less. Can not move while eating.

The food is great, it pays off for the bad service

by FoodCritic247

My friend and I shared the House Fried Rice (mix), and the Dancing Chicken, which by the way was the best I've had in a while, with brown rice (could be a little more on the well done side). Everything was delicious!!!

I could taste all the different spices used on both dishes, even though it was not in excess, and they were also very distinct.

The service however, wasn't the best. They were not busy and yet, I had to wait several minutes for the waiter to refill my glass of water, and they disapeared when we were ready to pay the check, any dishonest person could have walked out without paying.

But I will go back and recommend this place to friends and co-workers.

  • Pros: Good Food
  • Cons: Service

Nicest service and atmosphere for a nice Thai Experience

by PrognosisNegative

Came here first time taking a chance on a new Thai restaurant and was more than pleased. Small restaurant but great atmosphere and the service is outstanding. The Pad Thai was excellent as well as the Love of the Golden Nest (?). Went there on my birthday and had a nice romantic dinner with my girlfriend in a secluded area near the window. Prices are inexpensive and the food is delicious! Good for romantic dinner, out with friends or family.

  • Pros: Service, Food, and Atmosphere
  • Cons: Nothing really.

great choice for Thai food

by olsanchez

This place is ideal for a budget Thai lunch. This is a tiny low-scale place hidden in midtown. At lunch time the place is busy, you have to wait ca 5-10 minutes to get seated. If a place is busy in NYC, that's a good sign usually. Same here. Once you made your order, the food comes fast. Sometimes the waiters seem a bit disorganized tho. As the place is tiny you sit very close to others, which might be disturbing for a private conversation. I usually order masmaan curry with chicken. This is a must have for me if I'm there. So far all of their food was very tasty what I have just tried. Never had a bad experience on the quality and taste of the food. So far the best Thai restaurant I have tried. The place is cheap, 2 can have a complete lunch included everything for no more than 30-40 bucks.

  • Pros: Very good thai food
  • Cons: service
