“The staff are VERY friendly.”
“But this place is pricey!”
“Its so nice to have a stylist w/ long, unrelaxed hair.”
Wasn't Pleased. Received a cut I didn't care for. Was upset my stylist - AJ did not speak with me about her plan for my hair prior to cutting my hair. I am dissatisfied with my hair cut and will not return to this salon.
This is how a professional salon is.
I started going to John atchinson in the beginning of 2008 after having a horrible experience with relaxers for 4 years.
The first day I went, I expected to have that same old burning sensation in my scalp and the horrible cut...
my trichologist was Janice and she observed my hair and decided I needed a mild relaxer. And behold, it didn't burn at all...and I kept asking her.."are you really using a relaxer?" and she explained to me how she based my scalp and she doesn't comb it in and mainly uses her hands. I also realized as time went on that she would only get my new growth and she never made my new growth bone straight, which has benefited my hair greatly! So if some people are looking for bone straight you might have to tell your trichologist in advance about that.
My stylist, Pat who I believe has left, was also good with my hair and actually gave me a "trim" and not a "cut" and taught me how to do other styles to my hair instead of just having it straight 24/7. I felt very comfortable here, and my trichologist would always give me advise about my hair when asked and it was cause of John Atchinson's salon I was able to venture out more and learn more about my hair.
But this place is pricey! The last time I went I did pay around $185(relaxer + wash and style). But I would go every 10-11 weeks for a touch up...so they also helped me learn how to stretch out my relaxers =p
good service.
My stylist(Aishah) did an excellent job and was great at communicating what she was willing to do vs my expectations. She did a great job!
Its so nice to have a stylist w/ long, unrelaxed hair. She was able to give me great advice from daily experience and did not chop off my hair!! Rare to find all this in a precision cutter as well. (they rarely speciialize in ethnic/curly/afro-textured hair)
The salon wasn't "fancy" or particularly easy on the eyes. However, the chairs were comfy and my stylist had great tools. Considering its location, Iactually think the prices are a lil low. I would rather have slightly lower prices than plush surroundings.
Don't Do It! Don't be fooled!. If you want to waste time and money, this is the place to do it! I went to this salon probably close to ten years ago and I came across it on CitySearch and thought it was worth it to save someone else the trip, time and money. I've always had trouble finding good haircare so I made an appointment with Mr. Atchison himself figuring that he was the master and would be the best stylist. He's a lovely person but terrible stylist. He had my hair washed and blown out and then decided that it should have been roller set (I can get a roller set for $10) so I had my hair re-washed, rolled up and sat for another two hours. He "cut" my hair but it didn't look any different than when I sat down. I think I hung out in that place for about 5 hours and left looking like I did my hair myself. The kicker is that he charged me $185 Park Avenue dollars for the treatment. I was a student at the time and in so much shock that I just paid by credit card and left. My hair was in a ponytail the next day. I cried. Don't
Best hair salon in NYC for African American's.. When I went to John Atchison?s Salon I was extremely nervous. I have gone to many salons in NY and most of them messed my hair up. While at the other salons from start to finish I could feel the hair that took me over a year to grow out becoming more and more damaged. I research how to treat my hair all of the time so I know about combing technique and how delicate relaxed hair is etc. My visit at Atchison's salon was unbelievable. I finally found someone who got it right. My only gripe about the salon was that they didn't use the phytorelaxer but after getting two of those relaxers I realize that they are much too strong for my scalp. From the moment I stepped into the salon I was amazed. It is so clean, airy, and beautiful. The staff are VERY friendly. The trichologist Janice did an excellent job on my texturizer, and Maisha made my hair look phenomenal. At John Atchison they know how to style and treat you hair in a way that will keep it healthy. I'd recommend them to EVERYONE. It was the best hair salon experience I have ever had and I couldn't have been happier. :)
John Atchison Salon- Simply the BEST.
I have been a client of the Atchison Salon for over 15 years. I travel from the eastern end of Long Island (Sag Harbor) to have my hair relaxed and cut by the best.
After many years of unhealthy, over processed hair, I found the Atchison Salon and have not looked back. The salon standards are high and you see it in every phase of your visit.
The new salon is beautiful. The decor, atmosphere and proffesional attitude all lend itself to a relaxing and peaceful salon experience. Treat yourself, you won't be disappointed.
John Atchison Salon - The best salon for hair care.. I visited John Atchison Salon a couple of weeks ago and it was a pleasure. I went for a perm, color, trim and set. The trichologist and stylist were wonderful and they definitely know their business. Appointments are taken seriously and you are treated very well. At John Atchison Salon you not only get a great hair style, you get great haircare. I also love the John Atchison shine in my hair. I have had the unfortunate experience of visiting several hair salons in Manhattan in the past year, so believe me when I tell you, John Atchison is the best in the business. I am proud to say that I am a client of John Atchison Salon.
wonderful bounce. i had my hair done at the salon and the end results were beautiful. i had a relaxer and a trim. John was there and he was very nice and approachable as well as the other stylists who offered great advice for my hair. the best part was when i left the salon all the guys i walked past were breaking their necks to look at me. LOL my hair was so bouncy and perfect i didn't look like it was my own hair! my father also complimented my hair and he never notices anything. so you know mr. atchison's salon did a great job! it was worth every penny. i plan to go back very soon. :)
