Tips for Riccardo Maggiore Salon

A friend recommended this place to me but when I read Gina's review below, I had second thoughts. But I trusted my friend and went and I’m so glad I did because my hair turned out a beautiful light brown (without the red I hate) with some glowing blond lines (instead of streaks). Indeed I was so pleased that I think her review was actually written by a jealous owner of another salon. When I went in, I told the receptionist I wanted to see the products they use and she sent me right over to Akemi, their color specialist, who opened all the cabinets and showed me everything (and I recognized the labels as high end salon stuff). And when I asked her if anyone at the salon uses heat to process color, she looked at me like I was crazy and said, Of course not!. She did a fabulous job on my hair. And I thought the other colorists’ work was excellent too. So I’m recommending this place as the best I’ve gone to (and I’ve gone to many).

When I went to this place for the first time this morning, I was nervous because it looked “fancy” and intimidating. (It’s on Lex and 57th which is a very “high priced” neighborhood.) But my friend gets her hair colored and cut there and I love the way it looks so I booked an appointment with the people she uses. The colorist, Akemi, is a darling and she did magic with my hair. I’m all grey and white and I’ve been straightening it for years so the color is blah. She performed some kind of miracle and made it a rich light brown with some gold strands that weren’t streaks. (She said it was balayage [sp?].) The stylist, whose name is Ernie, was like an artist. He examined my hair from every angle, felt it all over, and then told me what he could and could not do. (His honesty was refreshing.) And he gave me a terrific haircut. I'm really pleased. It’s not cheap but it’s well worth the price to me. And everyone was very friendly, which is very important to me.

I had my hair colored at Riccardo Maggiore Salon. I always had to put my hair under heat for the color to take. One time I noticed that the color did not take at all. I started to think that the dye that they were using was not of the best quality. I went to another salon, the color dye that the new salon used colored my hair without any heat being applied. The new salon told me that the heat with the chemicals was not good for my scalp. I'm glad that I left Riccardo Maggiore salon-I'm sorry that I did not leave sooner –I'm concerned that the chemicals and heat damaged my scalp.

I am not exaggerating when I say that Akemi is the best colorist in the city. I'lll follow her wherever she goes because she is extraordinarily knowledgeable and talented. I'm 61 years old and have my hair chemically straightened every four months, yet it looks fantastic thanks to Akemis ability to subtly change the color (and paint single strands of hair slightly lighter color). Every time I see her, she examines my hairs color and texture in order to decide what to apply. And she's a darling sweetheart and a good listener.

Adrianna is an impeccable stylist and colorist. She listens to what I want, and aims to please, while at the same time offering her professional input as to what she thinks is best for not only the look she is giving me, but the health of my hair. She is also an incredibly sweet and down to earth lady, who makes every visit an absolute joy! I am thrilled to have found her, and highly recommend her to all for color, cut and other treatments. She does it all, and she does it all beautifully.

J. Mari is the BEST!. J. has been my stylist for many years. She is as talented as it gets. Newly added to her repitoire, she has created a holistic hair treatment which is beyond amazing. Here is what you get for a limited time price of $135

Step 1- An assessment of your hair, it's texture, its regular routine and what your goal is.

Step 2- The first deep conditioning treatment is generously applied to every inch of the hair.

Step 3- You are escorted to the sink where the next conditioning treatment is applied to the hair.

Step 4- An incredible, holistic pressure point scalp massage gently applied sending you off to complete bliss.

*This part of the session is where the healing aspect of the treatment takes place. There are pressure points on the head and when stimulated, send energy into every hair follicle, essentially 'feeding' the hair. Aside from it feeling amazing, it truly nourishes the hair in ways unimaginable. After that, J. will perform a chakra reading which is a form of energy work which helps to balance the entire body.

Step 5- The final conditioning treatment is applied, rinsed and gently towel dried.

Step 6- Your haircut of choice giving by J. Mari, one of the most sought after hair stylists in NYC. She has worked with top notch celebrities, designers and has been written up in multiple magazines for her outstanding talent.

Step 7- Your blow out and style. Once this is done, you will see and feel the amazing transformation to your hair AND your entire body. This treatment will make you feel beautiful inside and out and leave your hair feeling baby soft.

Run, don't walk! This is one treatment you don't want to miss!

Best Cuts, Color, & Straightening in NY and very friendly. I feel blessed at having found two people who are consistently able to my frizzy, wiry, ugly gray hair to look smooth, shiny, and healthy. Before I found AKIMI, the genius colorist at this salon, my hair color was dreadful. My hair has been straightened with every process that ever existed and it was burnt and porous, so no colorist could ever get the color to look “even” or natural. But Akimi said she could--and she did! She’s wonderfully obsessive about getting color “right”: whenever you see her, she examines your hair carefully and then tells you the extent to which she can achieve the color or highlights you want, based on the current color and condition of your hair. (And even better, she’s very gracious and friendly.)

And there aren’t enough superlatives in the language to praise RICCARDO (who’s nothing like I expected the owner of a very upscale Manhattan salon to be; he’s a sweetheart who makes everyone feel comfortable). On my first visit, he figured out my problem: The Keratin Treatment my stylist was giving me every few months was a waste of money because it can’t smooth out hair as frizzy and kinky as mine, and worse, these treatment has burned my hair. So he recommended a new kind of thermal straightening (like the “Japanese” one but much quicker and healthier). I was very nervous about it, but afterwards, I was thrilled at how beautiful my hair looked (and continues to look three months later). Riccardo is magical.

By the way, the person who faulted the salon because she had to blow her own hair obviously doesn’t go to “high end” salons or else she’d know that this policy is true at every “good” hair salon in NYC. The stylists and colorists at these salons are entitled to the large fees they charge because they are the very best in the profession (which is why they’re in such demand). Expecting them to do an additional service (like a blowout) for free is naive and inappropriate. Maybe stylists in local salons or those who aren’t truly expert provide this service for free, but they probably have to in order to keep or attract business. Regardless, the bottom line is always that you get what you pay for. If you want to go to a cheaper salon because they include the price of a blowout in the price of the service, go there. Just don’t expect the results that people who go to Riccardo Maggiore always get.

Fantastic colorist!!!. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair! I followed Adrianna from another salon, and I have to say, she is incredible. She takes time to understand exactly what you're looking for and her attention to detail is amazing. I've gone from blonde, to chestnut, to red...all of which I have loved. She is fantastic!!

The salon is nice - very relaxing. Seems like you are stepping outside of Manhattan. It's a little tricky to find, but it's worth it. The staff is lovely.

I had to do my own blow drying... tha'ts outrageous!. The salon itself is beautiful. However, when I first walked in, the staff automatically assumed that I was a hair model and was there for future stylists to practice on me.

Marina did my highlights She was nice, but told me I had to blow dry my hair on my own! Even my friends who are hairstylists can't blow dry their own hair (because it's harder when you are blow drying your own hair).

When I tell some people who I know about this experience, they don't believe me, but it is so true. Otherwise I would not waste my time writing this review.
