Editorial Review for John Barrett Hair Salon – by Jessica Branch
The Scene
In 1997, John Barrett and architect David Collins transformed the Goodman family's penthouse apartment into the John Barrett salon, where lilac walls and walnut-stained wood trim combine Zen tranquility with urban minimalism. Treatment rooms are similarly understated but well-thought-out--the ceiling lights averted from your eyes as you lean back for your shampoo; footstools carefully placed for easy access; the colorists' rooms adjacent to spectacular Midtown views.
The Services
Salon workers believe in subtlety--they'll let you go your own way, but, asked for suggestions, they tend toward the classic and elegant. Pleasant, professional and refreshingly attitude-free, the staff is as attentive as it is skilled, but without ostentatious effusiveness. Cuts and colors are just the beginning: They'll also provide manicures, brow treatments and other services. In keeping with the salon's general ethos, they succeed gracefully, with an apparent effortlessness that belies their discreet care.

I have had my hair cut by John Barrett a number of times and was satisfied. I've also had my color done there, and as a brunette, it has always come out too dark. The problem is that every time I've gone there for the past year, the front desk manager (a Caucasian woman in her late thirties with very long, brunette hair) has tried to rip me off and overcharge me. Each time, I had to argue with her and get the owner to correct her attempts to add several hundred dollars to the bill. I will never go back to the John Barrett Salon because I refuse to put up with this unethical behavior. The haircuts from John Barrett are $500! No haircut is worth that. A single process is $200---again, it's not worth it. You do not get anything extraordinary at the John Barrett Salon and there are many other salons in NYC where you can get great cuts and color for a LOT less money. It appears that John Barrett only wants rich old East Side ladies as customers. Too bad, since they don't have much hair. There are actresses and models who go there, but they don't pay. Shame on John Barrett, who seems to have lost his humility.
Pros: None
Cons: Snobby, pretentious staff who rip you off, outrageous prices

John Barret does the best blonde....hands down! Ross and carolina are awesome and so friendly. Very expensive but worth it, ive paid $200 for orange highlights and now always go to John Barret now and not waste my time, money, or misery. Plus you feel like you arent in NY-everyone is friendly and smiles at you the whole time and you can talk about anything with them!! This is my favorite place in NYC.....go!
Pros: blonde
Cons: price
