What Our Expert Scouts Say

March 02, 2013

A membership is worth it at MAD, a beautiful museum that seldom has crowds. With its prime location in elite Columbus Circle and history, MAD caters to both its Limoges-loving ladies who lunch and a newer, hipper clientele that loves exhibits featuring designs made of dust and dirt. Be sure to check programming for the upper floors, where workshops and residencies let you meet the artist, and the stunning view from Robert, the restaurant.

A Mad World. Just like that Donnie Darko song, it's a Mad World over at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) at Columbus Circle. Check out a crafty collection of contemporary hand-made objects from clay, fiber, glass, metal & wood from the Museum's collection. Pray that you are lucky enough to have Judy as your tour guide.

Very Interesting. I really enjoyed my Wednesday afternoon at the museum! I went with my friend who is in the industry who said all the exhibts were current and accurate.

great place to visit. I visited this museum last Saturday. I was surprised to see so many unique items made from ordinary things that we see every day. This museum is not very large but it inspires me to create something creative from what I have at home and display it in my living room.

Decorative and functional objects that elevate craftsmanship to an art at the former American Craft Museum.. The Story
This museum has been raising the public's awareness of the value of American craft and craftsmanship since its founding in 1956. Now that the worlds of art and design have become increasingly blurred, the museum has never been more relevant.

The Goods
On display in a four-story gallery space with a dramatic atrium, right across the street from the American Folk Art Museum, is the permanent collection of 20th-century handmade objects. The works range from everyday items, such as chairs and tableware, to the purely ornamental, such as jewelry and show-quilts. Every year, several exhibitions address trends, developments and new achievements in modern craft.
