Editorial Review for Tender Buttons – by Karen Hudes

In Short
This neighborhood institution is quite possibly the cutest store in Manhattan. Quaint fixtures and cozy wood paneling provide a backdrop to thousands of neatly arranged buttons. Such preciousness belies the store's practical, even necessary, function: If you've found that missing button on your vintage coat impossible to replace, you've clearly yet to look here. Buttons are held in rows of tiny boxes, with samples displayed alongside impeccably handwritten descriptions and provenance: "Faux horn chunks from Italy," or "A well-designed brown button from France."

Most prices are per button, although rare sets--boasting inlaid Swarovski crystal or 18th-century enamel from Japan--are also available.

Tender Buttons may be a small store but they have an extensive collection of buttons. Be prepared to bring cash, for they do not accept credit or debit cards. The buttons were, for the most part, on the expensive side. I walked out with a small bag that contained $200 worth of buttons. ( and i don't regret it!) The collections that hang on the wall can be $150+ each. Their buttons are great quality and whatever it is your looking for you can be sure you will find it there! They have even more buttons in the back in addition to the ones you see on the floor. The men that were there were extremely nice once i began talking to them. Remember your in New York City..often times people don't approach you for conversation. But the experience was great and I got buttons that I could not get back home. I will definitely visit Tender Buttons during my next visit to Manhattan!
