Unexceptional Food, Delivered Courteously

by nycinephile at Citysearch

A friend recently recommended Cafe Mingala to me, telling me that she and her ex-boyfriend had frequently had dinner there. Given that she and I share a passion for spicy food, I decided to give the restaurant a try last night. SERVICE: The gentleman who took my order for delivery was courteous and organized, repeating my order back to me in order to confirm it. My dinner was delivered promptly by an affable deliveryman. FOOD: The shrimp spring rolls were not freshly prepared and had a generally flavorless filling of shredded cabbage. While nicely spicy and marked with the distinctive flavor of basil, the basil chicken was dotted with overcooked broccoli. The chicken itself was thinly sliced and fresh. The rice was moist and pleasantly sticky. VALUE: Dinner+tax+tip=$26. My search for high-quality Asian restaurants in Yorkville will continue.

  • Pros: Courteous, prompt service.
  • Cons: Somewhat flavorless, overcooked food.

Interesting Cuisine, Cheap Prices, Nice Hole In The Wall Spot

by cobraman332 at Citysearch

We did not know what to expect at Mingala, since we just sort of wandered in off the street on a whim. But I must say, the restaurant is very quaint, pleasant, and low key. It was nearly empty at 8pm on a Friday night when we were there, and the service was good. The food -- Burmese, which we had never tried before -- is similar to Thai/Chinese with a twist, and offers a nice alternative to our typical dinner spots. The atmosphere lacks a little bit but both walls and the ceiling are covered with a beautiful mural that's worth a look. The best thing about Mingala is that it is very inexpensive. We will certainly try delivery from this place, and I'm sure we'll end up going back to eat-in as well since I don't think it's ever going to be tough to get a table here. I would have given Mingala 5 stars if the ambience had been a little better, but 4 stars still earns this place another visit as far as I'm concerned.

  • Pros: Good Food, Good Service, Cool Mural, Very Inexpensive, Nice Alternative to Chinese/Thai
  • Cons: Lacking in Ambience
