Editorial Review for Serafina Fabulous Pizza – by Tracey Ceurvels

The Scene
Take the two flights upstairs, passing terra-cotta-like walls, to the dramatic enclosed terrace, where oversized windows look up to the sky and the roof gardens of nearby doorman buildings. You'll be sitting next to local families, teens clutching the latest Louis Vuitton bag and couples who primp for pizza. Staff is quietly attentive.

The Food

The Italian menu has been created from a crew of chefs from the homeland, yet the food is mostly typical: Caesar salad, buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes, spaghetti with plum tomatoes. A stellar appetizer is an uncommon rendition of carpaccio--thin sheets of lobster served with arugula, hearts of palm and corn--and the most interesting homemade pasta is ravioli filled with black truffles. Fabulous thin pizza is the claim to fame, prepared in an oven made from volcanic lava from Vesuvio. The house-specialty pizza--topped with caviar or truffles--is as decadent as pizza gets.

Order the oven-cooked focaccia--the leggera is made with homemade mozzarella, tomatoes and basil.

I have been to this Serafina twice. The first time I just didn't like the place, while at the second time I had to leave because of a very very rude old man who was the host. The place has really bad acoustics - which amplifies everyone's conversation in the cozy room that it is extremely uncomfortable. The food was OK. But the old man who was the host was so rude that he actually moved our table too close to the next table (to create additional space). When we told him we will leave the restaurant, he was rude enough to take the drinks from our table and escort us. I was told he was the manager of the place and had no option for recourse. Don't know what the fuss is about this place and can't imagine why anyone who lives in New York will go there given the excellent other choices.

Cons: Terrible, rude service - especially by the manager / host

I like the setting, up the stairs overlooking Madison Ave. was fun. But. I expected a bit more with the $20 minimum per person. A middle aged lady at the entrance, long dark hair seemed to be the hostess but did not seem happy to be there, no smile the entire time, I did not feel welcome. She brought us into a bare restaurant and began to seat us against the wall when there was an open table for the 5 of us by the window. The waitress suggested the window table to us, urging it and the one already seated and the rest of us just followed her lead. The food overall was very good. Four dishes were ordered and I really only have a comment on one. The Crepes.....too much red sauce. (Possibly a tad too much on the lobster ravioli but it was very good) It overpowered them so much that I wouldn't order it again. Oh, and my iced tea was the size of a small coctail as was a seltzer with lemon. Service was confusing. Our waitress took our order and delivered our small drinks and she never checked on us again. We had to ask bus boys for water, more bread, more wine. Oh, they went to retrieve the waitress to order the wine. Towards the end of the meal, another gentleman seemed to take over and was attentive. I had seen her standing over by the little bar seeming to be watching her tables, not that there were many customers, but she never once checked on us the entire time we were there. Annoying. I think if you want to charge the price and want return customers you need to make sure each person is doing there job. I will not return with my out of town guests and will not recommend at this time.
