I have lived in a MG building for 2 years. We didn't have any problems with our unit during this time, so we experienced no issues with MG.
However, I have been in the process of resigning a lease with them and it has been incredibly difficult and unprofessional. We have waited almost 6 weeks to receive our lease. We were not informed if our applications had been approved, if we needed a guarantor, what the lease start date was, or what the rent would be for weeks until one day our lease showed up in the mail.
We have called the office over 10 times, leaving messages, with absolutely no response. We have sent over 6 emails with absolutely no response. If you hope to get a hold of someone over at MG, there is no advice I can give you.
During the 6 weeks that we were waiting, we still received rent slips (with the incorrect names and rent price). However, the super tried to come and collect our keys at one point and told us that he was informed that we were vacating. I'm not sure why we would receive rent slips if MG had it (incorrectly) in their system that we were vacating.
The entire experience was very confusing and also nerve-wracking as well had no idea if our applications would be approved, if the locks might be changed on the doors one day, and if we might be out of the street forced to find another apartment in a pinch (and if you know NYC apartment hunts, that idea is terrifying).
I am completely appalled by the way MG handled our situation and their lack of professionalism and customer service. When this lease is up, I will be sure to never live in an MG building again.
I just have to say that people there are really rude, they need to learn how to treat people.
unfortunate inheritance – We inherited Mautner-Glick after the building owners fired the last management company. It all started out pretty well, they actually fixed a lot of what that was needing repair in the building. We even got a decent super (he didn't last long at all) Then it all went down hill. The building up keep is nil, you can NEVER get anyone one the phone directly, and the people that they hire to do any kind of repair work are like the three stooges. They lost my and my neighbors rent , sent us nasty notices that we were in arrears, and when we showed them the receipt, they said "well, we won't start court proceedings yet" We are now on our 5th super and I don't see much improvement on anything in the near future.
No Bueno – I've been living in one of their buildings for a few years myself, and here are my thoughts.
To provide some pretext - I'm upper middle class. I have a credit score of 700+. I've lived in many parts of the world in many different contexts. Mauter Glick will be quick to point out that the people giving poor reviews on here are just sqeaky wheels. This review is written after a few years of experiences with them.
Right up until the point to which you sign the lease, they'll treat you like gold and have smiles.
At that very instant, they more or less abandon any type of help, helpful information,or useful support.
Calling their office is a little bit of a game, at that. Despite the amount of money that they make from their properties, the company's hours are something along the lines of 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with an hour lunch break in the middle. This makes it particularly difficult if you need to coordinate with them (on anything), as most people have real jobs and also work during those hours.
Even if you do happen to connect with one of their secretaries or office managers, their language, tone, and responses are very defensive and aggressive. I believe that kind of behaviour when working in the Service Industry is more or less morally reprehensible.
The building that I'm in is not attractive. The tenants feature a plethora of shady people; including the stereotypical cat-lady, hoarder, MILF, and hag (that shouts at children walking by. Yes, shouts. Not a typo).
The building over the past few years has been plagued by bed bugs, roaches, mice, and other issues.
Their defense for these is that the tenants weren't around for the exterminator to do their job. Oh - that's right. They hire an exterminator to go from apartment to apartment to spray, etc. Sounds good right? But wait - it's during the middle of the week, at 11:00AM. Absolutely not reasonable.
In summary: unless you're absolutely obligated to rent a Mautner Glick building, I'd see what else is available.
adequate – I lived in one of their buildings for several years. I would summarize it by saying they are average. You won't be amazed by the level of service you receive but it meets the standards you would expect.
Rude staff and poor record-keeping – I am a current resident of a Mautner Glick apartment building. I have an excellent rental history, with no late payments. I received a late notice letter in the middle of the month, even though they cashed the rent check on the 3rd. When I called them to clear it up, they said it wasn't their fault, and the third party they use to process the checks screwed up. When I said they should take some responsibility, they hung up on me.
I'd be careful renting with this company. It's one thing to have bad customer service, which they do, but the lack of accountability for processing rent checks and sending out late notices is unacceptable. My lease is up in June, and I won't be renewing. There are much better companies to rent from out there!
Really very happy with my new apartment – When I moved into a Mautner Glick apartment building, I remember reading these reviews prior and being scared that I had just made the biggest mistake of my life when I signed a year lease.
But, two months later, I couldn't be happier with my decision. I have lived in five different apartment buildings since I have moved to New York and this one is the best of the lot. The rent is decent for the space, it's clean, it's quiet, I have new-ish appliances, and the super is responsive when I call. I am very happy in my apartment and will probably stay here for another couple of years.
If you're considering a Mautner Glick apartment, don't be too scared by the reviews below like I was. You can have a good experience, too.
Save your money and your dignity. They're rude crooks – I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has experienced problems when dealing with Mautner-Glick. Because I am currently a full-time graduate student, Mautner-Glick required that I pay four months rent upfront, in addition to my security deposit (despite the fact that I had a guarantor) -- to me, that seems like discrimination, especially since none of my previous management companies demanded that I pay that much upfront. In January after personally delivering my rent check to their UES office, I received a phone call claiming that my rent was overdue and threatening to take me to court if I didn't pay by the end of the week. Several unreturned phone calls and e-mails later, I finally got in touch with someone and explained that I HAD paid my rent and that their office was to blame for misplacing my check. They then tried to demand that I pay $200 in interest, which I refused to pay, as such a late fee wasn't specified in my lease. I then wrote another check to them for that month's rent, which they cashed, only for them to then find the previously "lost" check and cash that as well! The following week I received a court summons in the mail due to "failure to pay rent." Once again, after multiple unreturned phone calls, I was finally able to get the situation resolved, and a lady at Mautner-Glick's only explanation was that "the courts are slow." I was appalled that they had started proceedings against me when the issue stemmed from their own incompetence! Today, I received a bill for $200 in legal fees, which I will also be protesting, but once again, I am unable to get in touch with anyone at the office. In addition to my issues with the management company, I have also encountered problems with my building's super. For 2 days, my bathtub faucet was pouring hot water and making my apartment uninhabitable due to the humidity it was causing. Of course, I was unable to get in touch with BOTH my super AND the management office. When my super came to fix the faucet two days later, he chastised me for keeping the bathroom door closed, but as I explained to him, it was my only option since he hadn't returned my calls and the dampness was causing my furniture to mildew. I would HIGHLY recommend that anyone searching for an apartment stay away from Mautner-Glick Corp. They are a poorly managed, corrupt business with TERRIBLE customer service!
UPDATE: I moved out of my apartment in May, but today I received two voicemails from my old super about a plumbing problem in the apartment. Apparently both my old super and the management company are under the impression that I still live in the apartment, even though I returned the keys, no longer pay them rent, and have already received my security deposit from them. Another example of what you can expect from Mautner-Glick.
Don't live in a Mautner Glick building – I am usually very laid back and not picky at all. When my boyf and I decided on the apartment we are in, the process in applying for an getting approval for the apartment was easy! The company promptly set up an appointment for us to sign the lease...and that's where the customer service stopped. 4 times in a year we have had MAJOR problems with this building and I am still waiting for a return phone call on any of them. [About 40 calls/messages and not a single one returned]. They are rude when you call, never return messages left, and the building here is falling apart. There are actual puddles in the wall that can be popped by poking at them....NO ONE has even looked at them yet. It's been 4 months since that started. Thank goodness my lease is up in 3 days. I will NEVER again work with Mautner Glick and would recommend to anyone out there to stay away also.
BAD ATTITUDE. good apt – My apartment was nice, clean, and well-maintained. Luckily I've only had to deal with their offices a few times because they have a POOR ATTITUDE. The lady I've talked to was very rude each and every time.
