Editorial Review for Face Station – by Jacqui Stafford

The Scene
With its soothing, warm earth tones, this brightly lit and welcoming salon manages to be everything to absolutely everyone. With an eclectic clientele mix of Upper East Side socialites and ultra-hip downtown models, Face Station is the official hair salon for the cable television station NY1 News, and has been featured in glossies like Vogue, Cosmo and Glamour.

The Services
Face Station offers everything from facials to deep conditioning treatments, but it's best known for exceptional color and the best shampoo service in the city, including hot towels and a deep neck massage. Giving back to the community, the salon offers free makeovers to battered and abused women from the YWCA and holds how-to makeup and hair seminars on the first Tuesday of every month through its affiliation with The Learning Annex.

I was recommended to Face Station by a friend who had a great experience. After reading the below reviews, I was skeptical but wanted to try it anyway and form my own opinions. When I made the appointment the receptionist was nice and friendly and quite helpful (recommendations, directions, etc.). When I got there I was greeted by two warm and friendly employees who were ready to create my experience. I had my haircut by David and love it (and I am really picky)! I have long hair and get nervous letting new people near it with scissors but he instantly made me comfortable. He also gave me suggestions on new ways to color it. Not once did I feel pressured to return, buy his product, or any traditional additional costs, which is something that I admired. I also had a pedicure which was great. She was very nice and thorough. Overall, I think that this is a great salon. One which I will recommend to my friends and definitely return to!

Pros: Overall great experience.

I have had facials regularly for the past twelve years. I have gone to regular salons and upscale spas and am not a snob when it comes to service. DUE TO THE POOR TREATMENT I RECEIVED AT FACESTATION I AM COMPELLED TO WARN OTHERS NOT TO SOLICIT THEIR SALON. Upon arrival, I was immediately whisked off without introduction to a small closet that passed as a room which two people could not fit into comfortably. The facial chair was pushed completely up against one wall and the "aesthetician" can barely slide by her station and your chair. These were my problems: 1. I was never asked which medications I use (such as retin-a) to make sure they didn't use something that could harm my face. 2. I was never asked what kind of skin problems I have (if any). Instead I was told to, "Relax. And you have oily skin." 3. She didn't use anything to cover my dress from the masks used or the splashing of DIRTY WATER. Therefore, I now have white mask stain on my chocolate dress. 4. The "aesthetician" never washed her hands even though she needed too! Her hands smelled of dirty feet. 5. The "aesthetician" never covered my eyes to protect them from the bright light used to magnify my face. 6. Extractions are supposed to be painful, but the "aesthitician" literally made my nose crunch. I grabbed her hand and told her to stop since she was hurting me. Her response was "You have a ton of blackheads on your nose." 7. She NEVER CHANGED THE WATER. There was no sink in the room so she continued using the bowl to rinse, lather and rinse again. The water was disgusting and gray by the second rinse yet she continued to "rinse" my face with it. 8. I checked my face during her frequent trips out of the room; she never once evenly applied a mask to my face. 9. I would have left in the middle of the service but there was nowhere to wash my face of the goopy mask she had thrown on and I didn't want to walk around the UES or make a spectacle in the middle of the salon.

Pros: The owner listened to my complaints and said he was glad I could "vent" and offered my money back.

Cons: Unsanitary, cramped, unprofessional staff, dirty, overpriced and painful. Please dont' make the same mistake I did!
