The Scene
New Yorkers tend to think of the Frick as their little secret, perhaps because it still looks more like a very grand private residence than an institution open to the public. But don't be put off--inside this French neoclassical building is one of the world's great art collections. For 15 dollars you can spend the day imagining you've been invited to a turn-of-the-century salon.
The Collection
Many of the rooms are arranged almost precisely the way Henry Clay Frick wanted them: Old Master, impressionist, Italian renaissance and French baroque works organized around thematic content and decorative harmony rather than the usual boundaries of style and date. The treasures found here include major works by Bellini, El Greco, Vermeer, Velazquez, Boucher, Goya, Turner, Van Dyck, Renoir and Holbein, complete cycles of painted wall panels by Fragonard and Boucher, and numerous decorative pieces including priceless time pieces and bronze statuary.

This museum if for people who love art and furniture and a peaceful setting. It is not as busy at the Met. Set on a quiet area you enter this home that is filled with the most wonderful art. You can take your time looking and exploring and taking all the treasures they offer. I love each room set as it was when the Frick's lived there. The conservatory is a wonderful place to rest. It is one of the most peaceful museums I've been to and I've come here over and over again. I don't think it is for children. It is for someone who wants to appreciate the finer things in life. PROS: Art to appreciate and love. CONS: None

Although this collection of paintings is smaller than the one at the Metropolitian Museum of Art, the quality of the paintings is just as good or even better. Some of the better artists include Rembrant, and El Greco. The atnosphere is also nice.

Located near Hunter College, the Frick Gallery is a rather well-kept secret. Housing many famous paintings, including Holbein's renditions of Thomases More and Cromwell and a variety of Fragonard murals, the Frick Gallery is beautiful inside and out. I went on a whim this Fall and was extremely impressed with both the scope and grandeur of the collection, and the perks. With the price of admission, patrons receive a free audio tour delivered through headphones. If you are able to visit the Frick Gallery, do so. It will be a wonderful experience.
