The Vibe
Isolated from most other art spaces, this small gallery offers excellent 20th-century photography, works on paper and multiples. It's a thrill to find avant-garde art, such as Bauhaus design or insouciant Dada and Fluxus creations, in any location. What's more, owners Jack Banning and Adam Boxer clearly have a sense of humor: The gallery is named for the gluttonous villain of Alfred Jarry's "Ubu Roi."
The Goods
Exhibitions here, if a bit academic, approach museum quality--they're often organized in conjunction with a book launch or a larger touring show. Recent subjects include Surrealist photography, the Dutch architecture and design periodical Wendingen and Vito Acconci's performances. Plus, for those who judge galleries by their complimentary opening-night munchies, this one is not to be missed.
