The Scene – There are two distinct personalities to the place: The loud, seemingly always-crowded bar with hanging paper decorations and dim lighting, and the two main dining areas, where the noise level and decor is notably more subdued. Service is swift, competent and helpful, though sometimes less than subtle about certain expectations, like upgrading to a double order of guacamole. – – The Food – Order the guacamole--it's quite good and made tableside with fresh lime, cilantro and jalapeno. Pork taquitos are great, but the shrimp and tuna seviche is…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
The house margarita is a tasty blended pomegranate concoction, but there's also homemade sangria and michelada, a classic Mexican drink made with lime juice, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco, topped off with beer.
ambiance
97.91999816894531% positive
  1. However, the decor was interesting, the service was pleasant, and although the margaritas were pricey, they were delicious.
  2. The ambience can go from romantic to a fun fiesta, dinner for two to dinner for 10, its a great place for everyone!
  3. The ambiance is nice, although they had the heat turned way up last night and it was only in the 60's outside.
  4. The atmosphere was relaxed and the wait staff was very attentive and helpful with recommending some items on the menu.
  5. great atmosphere accompanied by delicous drinks, atmosphere and very friendly staff.
  6. Go there, enjoy the decor, have a drink, maybe some app's at the bar, but don't eat there.
  7. We had a romantic experience.
  8. Cool scene, pretty good location but after that its pretty average.
  9. Great atmosphere.
  10. Good ambience and the entrees were okay, no awards won here.
  11. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service.
  12. And the bartenders at the 60th Street location are great, the atmosphere too.
dessert
71.4300012588501% positive
  1. but considering that this is the best Mexican Restaurant in town it is totally understandable ($50 for drinks, guacamole, entree, dessert, coffee, tip and tax).
  2. The filet is "butterflied" and covered in this amazing tequila cream sauce.
  3. For dessert I had a tres leches, which was delicious and different than any tres leches I've ever had before.
  4. Thereafter, the food only got better, we had the grilled filet mignon and the beef tenderloin entrees, and a delicious fresh mango/coconut ice cream dessert.
  5. The seafood stuffed tamale was incredible, and then they brought the dessert, which of course I ate despite full.
  6. The veggie plate and dessert are left off the menu, as if their presence is offensive.
  7. tip for those who don't like tequila like me: Ask to see the dessert drinks menu, which includes some alcoholic beverages that don't contain tequila (All the drinks on the regular drink menu have tequila).

  2. The drinks are good but expensive and the dishes are just as pricey.

  5. great atmosphere accompanied by delicous drinks, atmosphere and very friendly staff.
  6. True that this place is a bit pricey but the food and drink are worth it.
  7. Go there, enjoy the decor, have a drink, maybe some app's at the bar, but don't eat there.
  8. This place is always packed with a young, good looking crowd (especially the bar).
  9. We each had 1 drink, mine a beer and she had a frozen concoction that was not bad.
  10. but considering that this is the best Mexican Restaurant in town it is totally understandable ($50 for drinks, guacamole, entree, dessert, coffee, tip and tax).

  13. We agreed to pay the additional and asked him if the dish would taste good, this was when he told my friend that since she was vegetarian everything would taste good.

  17. The food at Rosa Mexicano is extremely overrated, I have never understood why it continually gets the ranking it does.
  18. As a Mexican living in the New York area, I have a hobby of trying Mexican restaurants in the city, searching for authentic food.
  19. Also, be sure to specify how you like your spice or if you prefer no spice at all - most dishes here are somewhat spicy!
  20. The fresh guac is to die for - the specials are always delish - and the margaritas are some of the best I've ever had.

  31. The food is a bit pricey and I wouldn't go there every day, but next time I feel like real authentic Mexcian.
  32. Not only was the hostess and server helpful and polite, but the food was great.
  33. Rosa Mexicano pulls off great authentic Mexican and not the blander, oily, Americanized stuff we've grown up with.
  34. The filet is "butterflied" and covered in this amazing tequila cream sauce.
  35. The service, however, was excellent, but definitely not enough to make up for the poor food and skyhigh price.
  36. Being a Bi Coastal guy I cannot find good pizza in Cali nor can I find good mexican in NYC.
  37. One of the few GREAT mexican food restaurants in NYC.
  38. great mexican food, not commercialized mexican, real quality food, best fish dishes I ever had and oh the margaritas!
  39. Other than the guacamole, which is absolutely delicious, and the heavenly frozen margaritas, the food was terrible--tuna enchiladas that tasted like they were made with canned StarKist; overly-fried tacquitos that reminded me of the little snack you get b

If you could give a half a star I would rate this 5 and 1/2 stars. I just think that 5 stars has to mean absolutely the best ever. We visited the Baja Coast this past February, and the food at Rosa Mexicano was better than any place we ate in Mexico.

Our experience was terriffic. My wife and I were there with our two children, 11 and 12. They are one of the few nice New York places that actually offer a reasonably priced childrens menu, so we were off to a good start. The entire staff was attentive and the atmosphere was very nice as well.

Our daughter has celiac disease (Gluten Free Diet) and they also had a gluten free menu, which is another thing hard to find in New York. They were so accomodating. The manager came out to our table and explained that if we wanted them to, they would start up a fresh frier with new oil to make her french fries. (He knew that her food items could not be fried in any oil that had bread crums in it.) He told us it would just add a few extra minutes to our orders.

I was having a little trouble seeing the menu and without prompt, our waiter came over and handed me a pen flashlight. He did an excellent job explaining the food. He even brought us out small samples of the various sauces to help us choose the right ones. I had the Crab Meat Enchiladlas with the green sauce, and they were outstanding. My wife had a chicken dish with a red sauce that was also outstanding.

We all had dessert, and my wife and I had coffee. The entire bill was only about $125.00 with drinks (we each had two). I though that was pretty darn good for New York.

Great Mex

The service was impeccable. Family fun, quesadillas and an amazing red sauce along with beverages from Mexico. She did a wonderful job explaining the menu and the origin of certain food from their region of Mexico. The corn tortillas are house made and incredible. A must see/eat.

Overrated & Overpriced

by anicunni at Citysearch

I went to Rosa Mexicano for the first (and last time) and left feeling really disappointed. For starters, anyone who knows me knows I love Mexican food. But this place just didn't do it for me. The selection lacks in what I would consider authentic cuisine and tries too hard to be chic. We ordered our food and I couldn't get over how SMALL the portions were! AND how PRICEY these small portions were! We had a couple of drinks and 3 appetizers and our bill came out to $75! Worse, the food was just so so, not good and definitely not great.. as far as Mexican food goes, on the bland side. The worst part of it all? We were still hungry and craving some good food by the time we left. How sad is that?

Not a place for vegetarians

by mihikae at Citysearch

Rosa has been my favorite mexican restaurant for 2 years now and I constantly rave about it and recommend it to friends. However I went to Rosa last Wed and was astonished with how bad their service was. I brought a very good friend of mine that was vegetarian and called beforehand to let them know that 2 of the people in our party were vegetarian.

When we got there and got around to ordering, our waiter was extremely rude and unaccommodating. My friend asked for a quesidilla with her choice of filling she was promptly told that the chef would not accommodate requests not on the menu. We asked our server to check if the chef would make an exception considering she was vegetarian and there wasn't anything but a veggie starter on available on the menu. When he returned he said the chef agreed to make the vegetarian quesidilla however would charge us $28 (this was more than the meat entrees on the menu). We agreed to pay the additional and asked him if the dish would taste good, this was when he told my friend that since she was vegetarian everything would taste good. I was so angry at his comment!

This is certainly the last time I'll be visiting Rosa or recommending it to anyone!! There are more than enough mexican restaurants in the city to never have to step into this establishment again.

What a rippppppppppppppppppp

by fafafafoooood at Citysearch

So, I went here on a date. She had an enchalada dish with shrimp and i had somethign from the grill. My dish consisted of a skewer with chroizo sausage and beef, they probably used half a chroizo... So all in all it was 1 skweer with 4 beef cubes and 3 pieces of chroizo. For starters of course we had an order of guac, asked for it to be made spicy which was ok, they made it table side.

We each had 1 drink, mine a beer and she had a frozen concoction that was not bad. All in all, with tip the bill was 2 dollars shy of $100. I am very big on money these days, btu have no problem shelling it out for a great eatery; after all, I'm a true food lover!

Bottom line is this, I only wish I had been before so i could have gone DOWNTOWN to a much better establishment such as Mole or Mercadito where we would have had much more bing for the buck food, ambiance, and money wise. Hey, even dos caminos woudl have been better!

Sorry Rosa mexicano, but aside from the 2 stars for the service, you guys stink!

  • Pros: good service
  • Cons: super over priced
