Small moans and other sounds of appreciation escape the passersby on Fifth Avenue who are drawn to these display windows as if caught in a tractor beam. The smart ones go inside, if only to fully appreciate the architecture of the flagship U.S. store. The story has it that Messieurs Cartier bought the mansion in 1917 for a pearl necklace valued at $1 million--plus $100 cash.
The Goods
There is of course room upon room of breathtaking jewelry and watches, and lots of shoppers buying them. For those with less-muscular bank accounts, this jeweler has something on that Tiffany joint up the street: All items are tagged, meaning you can occasionally peek at the price and find out which of the humongous sparklers costs a million. Ask the relaxed staff nicely and they might just let you try it on.

I picked up my new Cartier diamond ring today and the saleswoman there layed out all the stops for me, even gave me roses! The presentation of my gift was amazing. As always, Cartier is simply the best! Thanks for helping my hubby pick out the best anniversary present ever! Love my 5 carat ring!

Cartier first produced a men's wristwatch as a favor for inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, who sought a means to check the time while keeping his hands firmly on his aircraft's controls.
Know Before You Go:
When you get to 5th Avenue and 52nd St, take a look at the street sign reading "Place de Cartier." The City of New York gave the intersection that name in 2003.
