The Scene – Arching palms, lazy ceiling fans, moody lighting and haunting black-and-white photos of colonial Vietnam may make you feel like putting on a white suit and riding off to the poppy plantation, or planting the seeds of revolution. It's a popular place, and at peak hours you may be dispatched to the upstairs tropical lounge. Meanwhile, the charming staff handles things with aplomb. – – The Food – Over the years the cooking has lost some of its explosive zest, yet many enticing dishes remain. A signature starter, spring rolls filled with shrimp, pork and…
Cold Food, Bad Service... for $140
by JohnCage at Citysearch
Want to read a horror story...
1)The waiter never asked us if we wanted a drink
2) The appetizer came out cold
3) The wine was bad and was removed
4) The table next to us was given their main course before the appetizer
5) My meat dish came out cold, not warm, cold
6) The bill came to $140
Want my advice: stay as far away as possible from

Was a waste of my money

We were looking for a restaurant near the 59E59 Theatre before our show. I love Vietnamese food so chose this when given the nearby options. By chance it was also Restaurant Week. The RW menu of appetizer, main course and a mixed sorbet dessert was $35. Ordering an app and main course w/no dessert from the regular menu was basically the same price. Hmmm, I thought.
Oh, well. I opted for RW menu. I got the Crispy Duck Rolls with taro, jicama, mint and a nuoc cham dip as the appetizer. My main course was Pan Seared Wild Salmon with ginger crust, leeks and bell peppers, basil lemongrass “sauce.”
I put the word sauce in quotes because I consider a sauce a dressing that has some liquid consistency. What I got was a mix of oily vegetables scattered around the salmon. The salmon had NO TASTE. I mean really I just paid over $24 dollars for a blacken piece of fish that I could have torched at home for less money and WAY MORE flavor.
I didn’t mind that it was crusty; I was looking forward to that. But all I tasted was plain salmon covered in char. I asked for some kind, any kind of sauce to help give flavor. Even adding that didn’t help.
The duck rolls were greasy and not impressive.
I would have given this review 1 star but I tasted one dinner companion’s Grilled Scallops on egg noodles & rice noodles, gourmet greens, basil cilantro peanuts, chili lime sauce. It was tasty and tangy. Good summer meal (not on the RW menu)
My other friend seem pleased with her RW choice; Trio of Cha Gio, Grilled Prawns & Pork Loin Slice over rice vermicelli & mixed green salad, mint, peanuts & nuoc cham sauce. But as she says about herself she will eat anything.
Also I had a sip of both of their cocktails. Very tasty, especially the Ginger Mojito.
One last nit picky thing - When asked if we wanted coffee or tea I asked what herbal teas they had. I realized the waiter didn’t know the difference between caffeinated/Black teas and herbal tea. So the mint tea I asked for was of course not herbal.
Over all the experience was a waste of my money
- Pros: Good cocktails
- Cons: flavorless and greasy food
Unfortunate Decline
by sameerc at Citysearch
The food was terrible, relatively expensive (spent 200 for 3), and the service slow. I dont know if its the economy or a change in management and the chef but you want to take your money somewhere else.
I hope they are able to turn it around as it a nice lounge.
- Pros: Nice tropical colonial lounge seating
- Cons: Not worth it
