Editorial Review for La Grenouille – by Bryan Miller
The Scene
It's Valentine's Day every day at this glorious homage to classic French cuisine. The airy and glittering dining room makes everyone feel like a prosperous boulevardier, with its deep red banquettes, gold-leaf sconces and the most lavish flower arrangements this side of the Rose Bowl.
The Food
Like many old-line French restaurants, La Grenouille has loosened its tie a little and added a number of lighter, less-elaborate dishes to the menu, like a lovely grilled squab salad faintly aromatic of marjoram. That's all well and good, but the main reason to dine is for the timeless classics: foie gras with sweet-sharp fig vinegar, quenelles Lyonnaise (pillowy mousses of fresh pike) with an unrepentant wine-cream sauce and the renowned sauteed frog's legs. A chalky souffle aside, desserts are traditional and satisfying.

we went for our annual special dinner with my wife. we had wanted to go to La Grenouille other years but we thought it would be very stuffy. we were pleasantly suprised all the staff was very friendly we decided to go for the pre theater menu which is about half of the the regular pre fixe. it has a limited selection, my wife a plate of mixed cold appetizer which was very nice i had a salad, she had the calves liver very tender and flavorfull i had the cod which was vey good all the different flavors melding perfectly for dessert we had one of the soufles and i had the oeufs la neige( floating islands )classic french dessert...we will go back again and it will be for lunch same price as the pre theater but more choices. the only negative i can say is that there are alot of supplement on the menu such as the soufles, this is a french restaurant..... try it for lunch or the pre theater..enjoy
Pros: great flower arrangements... wonderful service
Cons: pricey..too many supplements..go for lunch or pre theater

I went with my mother to this restaurant for a pre-theater meal and was thoroughly disappointed. The food was quite possibly the worst meal I've had in New York. It reminded me of eating at my university dorm. What was worse was that the restaurant was nearly empty and our every move was being watched by a slew of waiters. The sleazy head waiter kept loading extra food on us only to ask for a head waiter tip on top of the regular waiter tip at the end of the meal. How tacky is that? We have to tip for hospitality??? I've been to plenty of great French restaurants in NYC and France and this place poses as a French restaurant. PLEASE save yourself and do not go here!!!!!
Pros: Ambience
Cons: Extra head waiter tip
