Nestled in the heart of the Upper East Side, Serendipity 3 could hardly be in a snugger, safer or more mainstream spot. The clean white walls, complemented by Tiffany-style lighting, create a welcoming, easygoing warmth. Once you start feasting on the frozen hot chocolate you forget how long you waited on line. My daughter and I go annually for a special treat.

Why the Wait?

Used to live down the block from here; due to the perpetual out-the-door wait, I would pop by an hour before, go eat elsewhere, and then head back for the reason to go--the dessert. The frozen hot chocolate is a much-imitated but unequaled classic. Not the cleanest joint, but chock full of retro, cute ambiance. Skip dinner and eat up dessert. Want to try the Vegas one next time I'm there.
