If you've never had the traditional cuisine classique, the old-rite French food of the past, you better hasten over here tout suite. All the great, heavy, unfashionable dishes that compose the canon are here: blanquette de veau, pot au feu, ill flotant, quenelles of pike....the surprising thing is that these old dishes, executed with meticulous care, don't taste old. The prove that history can still throw a punch, and that the new isn't necessarily the best, in French food or anything else.
Superbe!!!.
I LOVE this place. I am French, and new to New York, and visited this evening. What a wonderful time warp to what I imagine would have been 1940's-50's Paris! superbe!
The owner, Robert, is so wonderful- WONDERFUL. The staff is equally as nice, and are actually french as well. The food is great, and so is the desert and the wine. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a real French experience.
this place will get busier. this place was on Anthony Bourdain and he was crazy about it so expect more customers
Good ... not great.
This used to be a NY icon .
Now it is living on past laurels .
The food is fair to good , the service OK , though it is very slow . The wine list is good but limited
How Have I Missed This Place???. I've worked down the street from Le Veau d'Or for 17 years and just had my first (hopefully of many) delightful lunch here. $20 for a delicious three-course lunch is amazing, especially when the choices are numerous, the food delicious and the portions perfect. The space is a mid-century time vault and should be on everyone's list of places to try - who knows how much longer the owner will be around? Speaking of which, Robert & daughter Cathy are just delightful. Check out the review & interesting history in "The NY Sun" newspaper on line.
Best true French cuisine outside Paris!.
We made reservations for a Saturday night in mid-November, which turned out to be a smart move, as by 8 pm, every table ( only 14 total) was taken. Three older gentlemen were at the entrance as we walked down a few steps to enter the restaurant. We were seated immediately: the experience began! my wife and I had escargot, which you could actually smell the garlic and butter cooking in the kitchen as the chef prepared our meal just about 17 feet from where were seated. The escargot was tender and delicious! We ordered a bottle of the Boujallias Nouveau, which just came to the US this week. My wife had the seafood casserole and I had the duck in a cherry sauce reduction. Let me tell you... the duck was fabulous but the casserole, OH MY GOD! What a perfect dish. The mussles, scallops and shrimp were served over white rice covered with a white wine/butter/garlic/paprika and something else out of this world sauce that sent me into my own orbit!!! WOW!!! I actually couldn't speak after I had a forkfull. I finished my delicious duck, then happily finished my wife's remaining portion ( thank God she was full!) After I voraciously finished every grain of rice and seafood, we shared a peach melba that was T H E perfect ending to a true dining experience. The staff were professional waiters, meaning they knew their stuff. The young man doing the bringing-out and taking-of the dishes was great. A Parisian in training! YOU MUST EAT HERE!!! The patrons were older New Yorkers, probably right from this East Side neighborhood. My wife and I are in our mid 40's and were the youngest people there. I have dined in no less than 3 countries, 19 states, and in over 500 restaurants, and this was amoung the top 3 meals I have ever had. The best could have been the Chilean sea bass at the Bear and B ull at the Waldorf, then the lobster souffle at Chez Le Mer Michelle in Montreal.
ENJOY THIS PLACE! YOU WONT BE DISSAPPOINTED!
Best French Restaurant Anywhere in MidTown Manhattan-Robert is a true romantic.
Hemingway was a regular-two steps down and you are transported into a different
era. The paintings on the wall, including the sleeping calf are priceless. The food is a classic.
Bistro quality that is the best in Manhattan. Robert Treboux is the oldest French restauranteur
in New York right now and well worth a visit just to see him. He will tell you stories about the
second world war and french cusine. While most restaurants have come and gone-he has remained. The wine cellar is truly an landmark. While most of the wines are not on the wine list-
they are in the basement. There are more rare and obscure bottles down there than any other French restaurant in Manhattan. The food is from Haute Savoie and the only restaurant in existance in Manhattan that specializes in food from that region of France.
Le Veau D'Or is truly unique and well worth the visit. Highly recommended.
Best French food I ever had. I went here on my honeymoon after reading about it on citysearh. This place is very cool. It is a tiny place and was not busy when we went. I had the skate. I have never had fish like this. It had a thin crust that had a lemon flavor. Trust me you need to eat at this place before you die.
Literally, the best place in the city.... I bring every new date to this place... If Robert has seen you more than once, you're family. If you consistenly bring cute dates, you're in the will. The food is consistenly amongst the best in the city, the old-world ambience will make any newbie fall in love with the place and Robert will make you feel as if you're a member of the court. Trust me, if you go to this place on a date, you're going to be kindly rewarded. For the record, this used to Hemmingway's old haunting ground back in the day.
Step back in time at this ancient French bistro, where the conversation is as good as the classic fare..
The Scene
It's a time warp--Paris, 1945. The faded, wood-lined dining room is adorned with maps, photos and posters. Up front is a small bar where the legendary storyteller and proprietor, Monsieur Robert, welcomes every customer, most of whom have been coming here since John Lindsay was mayor. If the phone rings while Monsieur Robert is weaving a yarn, the nearest diner is expected to answer it.
The Food
The menu is right out of Escoffier: skate au beurre noir, homemade pork terrines, coq au vin, grilled hanger steaks with French fries, roasted chicken, monkfish with lobster sauce--all perfectly satisfying. The cassoulet is one of the best in town, rich with duck confit. For starters there are leeks vinaigrette, escargot with garlic butter, onion soup and more. For dessert, go for the classic oeufs a la neige if Monsieur Robert doesn't talk you into trying one of his special boozed up crepes.
A Classic Bistro!. From the minute your host, Robert Treboux, welcomes you at the door, you can't help but feel drawn into another time and place. The ambience is Paris Bistro and the food, delicious!
