Great Movies from New York Video. New York Video has to be the best kept secret in NYC. I wouldn't have even known about it if a friend hadn't told me it existed when I was once again complaining about how Blockbuster stinks. Maybe because it's not located in a "cool" neighborhood it gets no attention. I've certainly never seen it written about in the Voice or Time Out New York. Film lovers should definately check this place out!

It took me a few minutes of browsing to realize what a true treasure this place is. It's not a big store, but it is crammed with the most comprehensive film collection I've ever come across. Every category I went through was just full of great films. They have stuff I didn't even know was available; from the mainstream to the most obscure. I immediately signed up to rent . It is so great to be able to wander around a store not knowing what you may come across. The employee working that day told me they've been at this location for 22 years. Obviously a lot of time to collect so much stuff.

Which brings me to the staff...I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the people who work here are genuinely nice and knowledgeable. They never come off as corporate cutouts, but seem excited to be there and helpful. I really appreciate their enthusiasm and knowledge. It's a pleasure to see a group of people enjoy their jobs.

And one more thing, on Tuesdays they have a 2 for 1 deal. What more can a girl ask for?

Am I Dreaming?. I stumbled upon this store by chance and couldn't believe it. It took me a few minutes of browsing to realize what a true treasure this place is. It's not a big store, but it is crammed with the most comprehensive film collection I've ever come across. Every category I went thru was just chock full of great films. Stuff I didn't even know was available they have., from the mainstream to the most obscure. I immediately signed up to rent . It is so great to be able to wander around a store not knowing what you may come across. The employee working that day told me they've been at this location for 22 years. Obviously a lot of time to collect so much stuff. I still do Netflix, but I'm changing to their cheapest plan now that I found this place. I really like the experience of going in a store and chatting about films, maybe get a great recommendation of something I would have never thought of seeing. I mean let's face it, Netflix recommendation system is really just a computer program and I've never once used its suggestions. I didn't think places like this still existed. They still have their entire VHS inventory so if you have a working vcr they have so many titles that still don't seem to be available on DVD. Oh yea! and they deliver if you live in the neighborhood. If you're really into film this place will make your head explode. Seriously!

Great Video Store. The staff are great. For example, I have a 4-year old son and I can ask them to pick out 10 movies that he'll like so we can bring them with us on vacation, and they gladly do it (and do a good job, too).

They also have a great selection and they know their stock - you can ask questions, or what movies are similar to ones you like, and they will help you find new favorites.

Prices are fair - no overpriced late fees. And they have a drop-off box.

I'm glad to have these guys right across the street from my building (Sutton House - 415 East 52nd Street).

BEST VIDEO STORE IN MANHATTAN. The best video store in New York City and maybe in the entire country, or even the world. No, I'm not exaggerating! Over 20,000 titles, friendly and super-knowledgeable staff, and they order everything for their stock of DVDs and VHS -- I mean EVERYthing. They've been around forever at this location (since early 1987 I think), which is not easy in their neighborhood; I don't even think Blockbuster managed to survive there. So you KNOW that N.Y. Video has the goods! (1st-time message.)

World Class. Terriffic store! They've really got it all. Really great rental specials (most notably the two-for-one tuesdays) keep me coming back. The knowledgeable staff are extremely helpful when it comes to finding that movie with that one guy who was in that thing with that actress that time. Definitely the best store in the neighborhood, if not the entire city.

"Every movie ever on video, no matter how obscure," claims this Sutton Place rental empire.. The Scene
VHS covers are laminated to the size of records and set up in bins, so flipping through movies is sort of like browsing through old LPs at a garage sale. The films are divided into clever, unusual genres, like "Mad Scientists," "Courtroom Dramas" and "Movies With Animals," in addition to being cross-referenced by actors and decades.

The Goods

They claim to have every movie ever, but you'd have to be a real film buff to test them. The top-notch stock certainly seems comprehensive, however. This is that rare video store that's strong in simply every section--and it's even come up with its own sections for unclassifiable movies. From new release to indie rarity, it's all here. In addition to rentals, NY Video also sells DVDs and VHS tapes displayed in glass cases.

An Oasis in the Video Desert. Just wanted to say this must be the best damn video store in the whole world. I was stunned at the selection of films this store holds. Not only the obvious new releases but stuff I've never seen in any video store anywhere. They definately have the best selection of classic Hollywood films and foreign films of any video store I've ever been in.

This place has to be the best kept secret in NYC. I wouldn't have even known about it if a friend hadn't told me it existed when I was once again complaining about how Blockbuster stinks.
