This house of worship is also home to an impressive art collection and a jazz vespers..
Overview
The fact that even a stairwell is used as a gallery space testifies to this Lutheran congregation's devotion to art as an important component of spirituality. Established in 1977, St. Peter's holds mass daily. Nothing unusual there. But the church also hosts a jazz vespers--and its Bach at Saint Peter's Festival has been produced annually since 1993.
Features
Ann Sherwin Bromberg's handcrafted ornamental drape "Ascension" hangs behind the altar; Louise Nevelson created the pentagonal "Chapel of the Good Shepherd"; Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro fashioned a cross for the exterior; a crucifix designed by Kiki Smith is used for some processions. Works by the glass artist Dale Chihuly have repeatedly been on display.
