The Scene
The 80-year-old Paterson Silks originated as a pushcart on the Lower East Side, but now it's a New York staple for just about any fabric or sewing need. Although the Union Square and Delancey Street locations have both closed, this Upper West Side branch still gives fashion students, decorators and crafty types a variety of discount cloth options in a no-frills setting (except, perhaps, for the lacy ruffles for sale by the yard).
The Goods
Since most people don't have their clothes hand tailored these days, Paterson specializes in decorating fabrics, with plenty of choices for slip covers and upholstery; they even run a custom design service. Brides who take the dress process into their own hands are frequent customers, but if satin and tulle aren't your thing, there are plenty of everyday textiles to choose from.
