The Scene – A startling revelation in shiny black lacquer, Shun Lee exudes Asian chic with grand authority. From a bevy of alabaster white monkeys hanging playfully from the bar, to the glowing, fire-breathing dragon wrapped around the length of the dining room, fiery-eyed, sculpted creatures create aesthetic drama. – – The Food – For haute Chinese food, it's among New York City's best. Regional offerings include red-cooked pig's knuckles and oxtails (Shanghai); filet mignon with garlic, scallions and hot pepper (Hunan); duck liver sauteed with Chinese mushroom…

  3. The food is excellent, the service attentive and the atmosphere great!

  1. And surprisingly the desert menu was good, got the chocalate mouse cake.

  1. In addition to being overpriced and overrated, the combination of mediocre food and horrible service made this the most disagreeable dining experience we have had in New York City.
  2. Whether it was the shoddy service, where it was obvious that better service was being provided to the non-Asian patrons, or the overpriced, COLD dim sum at $6.50 a dish (3 times Chinatown prices), or the ANT that crawled out of one of our dim sum steamers
  3. And DO NOT EVER expect any good service (or even good food for that matter).
  4. their food is ultra amazing!
  5. She enjoyed the shrimp, which were HUGE!
  6. For a Chinese food purist as myself, I find it hard to justify going anywhere else outside of Chinatown to get excellent Chinese food.
  7. don't mind paying up for a good place but the lack of quailty in food, the cheese of the atmostphere, and the clueless service makes you feel like the biggest sucker on earth for sitting there in the first place.
  8. My fiance and I frequent low key, no frills Chinatown restaurants for good Chinese food at value prices.
  9. Being Chinese, we know what good Chinese food should taste like.
  10. lukewarm food, mediocre service but extremely upscaled prices is NOT in their best interest or mine, so i ask you: is shun lee really "beyond take out"?
  11. enjoyed orange chicken.
  12. The waitstaff was very helpful and eager to please, and the food was excellent.
  13. All dishes are overpriced and most are bland.
  14. Stick to Chinatown if you want Chinese food, you get at least what you pay for, unlike here at Shun Lee West, where you get nothing more than poor service, cold dim sum, and unwanted guests at your table for 3-4 times the price you'd pay in c-town.
  15. not only were the staff the best, the food is just amazing every time i go.
  16. Main course delicious.
  17. Appetizers delicious, only wish they'd give more per serving.
  18. The food is excellent, the service attentive and the atmosphere great!
  19. loved the food.
  20. DIRTY dishes; HORRIBLE service; Mediocre food.
  21. By this point, our mediocre meal was ruined and tempers were flaring.

Why only white people are here

by merryeat

Really?! What asian restaurant don't know how to cook rice? And $14 for a small plate of Cold Sesame noodles; it wasn't even that extraordinary. Maybe it's the location, caucasian patrons, but this place was overpriced, undercooked, underwhelming and I never plan to go here again.

White people: if you go to an asian restaurant, and the only patrons are other white people, then you deserve that plate of bad food.

Embarrassing Food for the Price

by xiaoja

I came here with my husband for Chinese New Year. We ordered one Shanghai juicy buns, one Half Beijing Duck, and one Grand Marnier Prawns. The buns were not juicy, the duck was not fresh, and the prawns were covered in a greasy layer of mayonnaise-like goo. Alas! $90 later, we were still hungry. What a shame. In its own shock-and-awe fashion, Shun Lee managed to butcher the crown jewel of Chinese cuisine - the Peking Duck. The duck was obviously frozen and NOT fresh - as the flesh was dry and chewy at the same time. What a waste of our time and money.

DON'T GO TO SHUN LEE

by ASALT

This place offered the worst service that I've ever had in my entire life. They were rude and acted like they were doing us a favor waiting on us. We never leave without tipping but this place was the worst ever. If you're paying money to go out you expect to be treated like a customer not someone that is a bother to the restaurant. I hope they go under during these difficult economic times. DON'T GO TO SHUN LEE!!!!

  • Cons: horrible service
