Not What It Was. Depending on which location you visit the quality of the staff varies wildly. The store at 360 Amsterdam used to be great, with a staff that was really knowledgeable. Now it's hit or miss, depending on the day. Also, compared with JackRabbit the shoe selection is not nearly as good as it could be. They seem particularly light with excellent models from a few leading shoe companies they simply don't carry, the Green Silence from Brooks, for example. It's far better than the average sporting good store if you want running specialty items, but you may find yourself frustrated if you go expecting a truly knowledgeable staff and a wide selection. It seems the recent spate of competition has made Super Runners worse, not better.
Okay selection. Staff is helpful, but the're is an air of elitism in the store. I had requested a pair of running shorts and they tried selling me last year's model (2005). I felt like they treat people differently according to how one "looks as a runner"; however, the staff with whom I spoke did not really know much outside of what they may have read in Runner's World. Helpful, but somewhat snooty.
Fashionistas beware: the eerily proficient staff at these stores sell running shoes to people who actually run in them..
People who buy running shoes because they have gimmicky air-pumps, springs, and hip advertisements will hate these stores. They do not sell sneakers that look hot with hip-huggers. In fact, the running shoes at Super Runners are often flat-out ugly: the store sells a frightening number of sparkling white Asics or New Balance sneakers that would insure the wearer a strong hip-check from any self-respecting bar bouncer.
But for serious runners who care more about arch support than style, there may be no better podiatrists than the clerks at these stores. Inside these plain, utilitarian boxes of stores, the staff possesses a preternatural awareness of insoles, treads, trusses and laces. They will guide you toward the best possible athletic shoe for your particular foot, joint problem and type of running. Be warned: the staff will mock customers who say superficial things like, "Do you have this pair in black?"
Got Sneakers?. If you run, jog, or walk, this is where you go to get the correct shoes for your feet. Knowledgeable staff. Discounts for running club or gym members.
