Cute place, Comfort Food, Cheap drinks – This place is nothing fancy but has yummy comfort food and pretty cheap drinks. The grilled cheese sandwhiches are AMAZING and I had a refreshing TY KU liqueur (on the rocks) to start with. Definitely a good place to stop by for lunch or a late night meal.
prety good! – this is a good place to go if you want to sit down for a home-cooked meal. Classic breakfast and comfort foods. Portions are good and not overpriced.
Don't expect a 5 star resturant, but for what it is, its prety good.
Important to know- they only take cash.
Such bad service you just have to laugh - true story inside – Wow, where to start. What you're about to read is a true story that happened tonight, July 7th. At a poker game, a few of us decided to order from EJ's. We order a grilled cheese, 2 orders of fries and 2 Pepsi's. After repeating our address 4 times and our phone # three times, we finally got everything straight. When the order arrived, it was 2 orders of fries and two DIET Pepsis, NO grilled cheese! I immediately called back, and it took 4 more times to get the address straight (I am American-born, speak perfect English) and actually the manager had to get on the phone. I told both the order-taker and the manager that we didn't get the grilled cheese and that we had wanted two Pepsis, NOT diet Pepsis. 15 minutes later the delivery guy comes back with TWO grilled cheeses and two more DIET pepsis!!! When we saw that, all of us just started laughing. We could not believe they had completely gotten the same order wrong twice. Not only that, when the delivery guy arrived he HANDED ME A BILL for the missing items from earlier! Please note that we had PAID the first bill. We didn't notice what was missing until 2 minutes after the first delivery guy left. Naturally I told the 2nd delivery guy that we already paid and weren't going to pay a 2nd time for the same food. The 2nd delivery guy gets back to EJs and the manager calls our phone # threatening to call the police if we didn't pay the bill!
This is a true story. We all sat at the poker table reminiscing about the "Chinese Restaurant" Seinfeld episode and how this was even worse. We will NEVER EVER order from EJ's diner again as it has the biggest morons in the world taking orders. Remember that the MANAGER couldn't even get it straight and then called to threaten us for not paying a bill we'd already paid!
Mediocre food and jerky owner – My wife and I took a chance on this restaurant this morning. We definitely wouldn't return. The owner, who was acting as the host, basically pointed at our seats and barked at us to sit there. I ordered Huevos Rancheros that didn't look anything at all like what you would expect. It was basically a lettuce salad with some canned beans and salsa. My wife ordered the sweet potato and turkey hash. The sauce was overpoweringly bad and it came with nothing else. The menu looks like one of Gordon Ramsey's nightmares. The chef must be one of those "jack of all trades, master of none," because everything you could imagine was on the menu. Everything was a la carte. The coffee was okay for diner coffee. The waitress was really nice, but when she asked how everything was, we had to be honest. They also only take cash and the ATM wasn't working, go figure. $28 for two dishes and coffee, no sides. The place was full, so they must have a captive audience of locals who have no other options or don't want to wait in line somewhere else. The fact that people have raved about this place makes me doubt the taste of upper-west siders.
beware screaming managers – The food is great for the prices. Be sure to catch the early bird breakfast/dinner specials. Great food for you buck. however if you cant stand managers screaming across the room at his employees stay away. Its spiols the whole dining experience. Beware Brunches. Long wait and rushed services.
Good for breakfast.....steer clear of dinner – We spied this place after passing it on the bus while on route to the Popover Cafe for breakfast. I have to say, EJ's french toast was truly satisfying....and the ambience made it an interesting visit...along with the kid friendly menu. So, with that in mind, we tried it for dinner...though I should've gone with my gut instinct not to. Note: always go with your gut instinct...especially in matters of food. The steak was tough (yeah, I know who orders a steak at a diner?), and the chicken parmesan on a bed of fettucine was bland.....and they didn't even have parmesan cheese! The bill was pretty steep, and turned out to be a mistake on the waiters part, which was corrected by the manager on staff. In a nutshell, you gotta try everything at least once....which was once too many for me.
Always a great meal! – We love EJ's - the staff is really friendly, the food is always, always good. The service is quick and attentive. The desserts are delicious, especially the strawberry milkshake. EJ's has specials every night in addition to their large menu. Very much a home-cooking place. The delivery service is quick and food is really hot when they arrive. They will e-mail specials as well.
Nothing to write home about – I don't know why this or most of the restaurants in NYC make the "best of" list. I've been to this place many times and it's only "average". It's NOT the best. Guys, please stop raving about places that are only so-so. It's just your average diner.
delicious – fast service and good food! especially glenn the waiter. he also keeps your orders just the way you want them. great place!
Satisfying – I have had a positive time at EJ's the 3 times I've been there. A highlight has been the service. Friendly and prompt (staff seems to work as a team. Wow.) Sandwiches and wraps are fresh and satisfying. The buffalo wings were excellent (but not a regular menu item, oddly.) The decor is diner-cute, which has its charm if you're in the mood for it. Prices are decent; it is cash-only.
